Would deer skin chaps shed briars

Unread postby buttonbuck » Sun Mar 29, 2020 4:06 am

2 questions.

Do chaps sheds briars without snags or just keep you from getting poked.

If I stitched deer hide to a pair of pants, would it shed briars like deer do going through the stuff.

Im trying to figure out if theres a way to move through the young pine and briars without snagging and making a ton of noise. The trails are all there so its not the thickest of briars deep in it. But there loud.

I would think it would certainly help. Only one way to find out. Just make sure you're hunting in jeans and a flannel to look the part! Deer skins and pixie dust suits don't compliment each other very well

I had deer skin gloves and a deer skin jacket made. The leather is rather fragile, I don't think it is going to hold up well to briars like multiflora rose. Maybe leaving the hair on and faced out might help. I guess not much to lose by trying it.

Definitely whole hide, with hair on. Im gonna take a big buck hide I skinned and walk through the briars and see if it works.

Definitely leave the hair on. I wear deerskin gloves a lot while hunting and around the farm, briars, barbwire and such will cut and pokes hole in them if ya ain't careful.

I’m wondering if the briars still catch those pants creating a ripping sound and if the deer hide will shed briars without noise.

Careful you don't get yourself shot wearing deer skin with the hair on in thick brushy areas!

Yikes.

Do that around here and you are likely to get shot. Be careful.

I would go with brush pants and shirt. Deer make their way through the thick stuff pretty well but even deer will still avoid the real nasty stuff, their skin isnt briar proof. I actually watched a buck stall in front of some thick southern ohio briars on me once. He had two choices, run through an open field or go through the briars. He did not want to go into them, but he liked the open field less. He took a huge leap, almost like he was trying to get over them, but they went too deep into the woods and he landed in the. Big huge crashing sounds mixed with long drawn out grunts as he bust through them, sounded like he was moaning in pain until he got through to the other side.

I used to have a dedicated pair of buck hide gloves for when I was driving deer out of briars. They worked great.

I wouldn’t rely on that.

More than once I have seen rifle and shot gun hunters hunting during the archery season on bow hunting only property here in New England. Five or six years ago I ran into a guy uniting in the middle of a 1,000 acre bow hunting only area.
