After the Rain...

Unread postby HunterBob » Thu Sep 17, 2020 4:03 am

So we are supposed to get about three inches of rain in the next couple days, which will let off sometime late on Thursday evening. This may work out perfectly for me as I have time to hunt on Friday morning and Saturday afternoon.

The question I have is what strategies you use after the rain. I hunt mostly thickly forested hill country and river bottoms, with some small beaver swamps in a couple of areas. Nothing will get too flooded, other than the swamps and the rivers will be running deeper and more swiftly for awhile. I am considering hunting a bedding area on a hillside that overlooks the swamp on Friday, then scouting out the area for Saturday.

Would love to know any thoughts or input you all have on this.

Acorn trees close to bedding.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Yep they really seem to gorge on fresh acorns knocked down from a passing storm. I’ve killed a few does bow hunting in the morning rain over acorns.

After a heavy rain like that the travel patterns can change due to overflowing creeks that they would otherwise cross. This may or may not create an edge in the valleys.
Early season scrapes if you have them. After a hard rain they like to freshen them up.
And like previously mentioned the king of the woods is acorns so isolated trees near bedding is dynamite.

On the Hunting Beast Podcast it gets mentioned a lot that when a large storm keeps them in bed longer the night before, they typically go to bed later, which may give you a chance to catch them on the way back to bed.

Use alot of Bug spray.
After a rain the mosquitos are awful.
I'd hunt a scrape near bedding and oaks nearby.
