Re: Why do you hunt public land?
I hunt public land because it's easier to get away form people. I hunt one lease currently and have hunted a few others from time to time. But your so constricted and it doesn't take long for the deer to really feel the pressure and in return hard to kill. At least on public I know if I can make a difficult climb or swim to where know one else goes, I will in return find my own little sanctuary. Most of the time there a good buck living in those areas. I enjoy scouting people as much as I enjoy scouting for the big boys.

Re: Why do you hunt public land?
My answer used to be I hunt public mostly to keep the pressure off my land. However I just really love the challenge and to be honest it keeps me from burning out as well. After hunting the same 80 acres of private land for almost 20 years I crave different scenery. The new scenery with each hunt seems to keep me on my toes more.

Freedom, the challenge, and many of the other reasons mentioned by others...Ultimately I hunt it because it is "mine", as it is "yours"..Probably our greatest resource. I wish more people utilized it, and understood how important it is, and how lucky we are..Especially here in Michigan..But yeah, its the challenge..:)

Re: Why do you hunt public land?
Here in Minnesota we are lucky to have 1.2 million acres of state land. That doesn't even include Federal and private lands leased for public use. With so much opportunity I would feel guilty not utilizing the resource and only hunting the 80 or so private acres I have access too. I really think that a lot of public land is less pressured than the private lands too. Especially in farm country where guys are driving trucks and atvs all over their private lands. A lot of the best cover around is a lot of the times public too because it is generally a cattail marsh or swamp that the state bought up.
Lastly, I get bored with the same scenery and like to explore new areas. One of my favorite things to do is cyber scout a new public area, plug a stand location into my GPS from my computer, and then go find it and hunt it.

I hunt public because I don't have access to any private but. Here in Western KY it's not a bad thing lots of public land within an hour drive and the bucks are just as big

Re: Why do you hunt public land?
It's simple "Wide open spaces " I'm far less limited hunting public.
I have permission to hunt at least a thousand acres of private near my home but most of that is small farms under 100 acres, that limits you to where you can go in a given square, the deer your hunting may be bedding on neighboring property and you never have a real good chance to kill them other than maybe during the rut, you are not even able to unravel the whole mystery of the buck or how to hunt an area because your limited as to where you can walk. That's why I prefer hunting big public around my home over private unlimited access.

Re: Why do you hunt public land?
I like the challenge and honestly i think bucks on public are as big as hunting clubs. Plus less pressure then a hunting club.
Ill never be able to afford enough private land to hunt many spots.

Re: Why do you hunt public land?
The great thing about public land is 95% of all hunters assume it gets hammered and there are no big deer - it's not worth the effort.
