Re: Public Land sightings
Varies a lot.
Big woods, early season (October 1 - 25), I would say <25%. A lot of that is because I have started targeting mature bucks, and they hang off alone during the pre-rut. I still have a lot to learn from the Beast about early season hunting. Evening hunts during this time frame I have done sits over food sources where I will 95% see does.
Rut I would say it transitions up into the 75%+ as it heats up. I have a couple select rut spots that I know if I sit all day I will just about 100% see a buck or three, just a matter of seeing the right buck.

Re: Public Land sightings
This year has been my best year on public thanks to the Beast.
4 hunts no deer-were the wind played games with me and was totally wrong, 1 pushed the deer out of the bedding area, I could hear them running. 1 was scouting in a down pour.
3 Hunt - saw 1 deer all 1.5 year olds
1 Hunt - saw 5 deer, a 1.5, a 1.5, a older bucks, doe, and a fawn.
So 50%, the more places I scout and learn the better it keeps getting!

Re: Public Land sightings
Good question and good replies. I've seen one good buck this year. It's been getting worse and worse here in my area. Year after year I've seen big declines first in buck numbers and now in doe numbers too. I started getting back into deer hunting about 5 years ago. I went to the public marsh having no experience in that area but did some imagery scouting. I saw 5 mature bucks that year not knowing the marsh. Now I'm lucky to have one encounter in a season.
Dogs have many friends because they wag their tails, not their tongues.

Re: Public Land sightings
Ive seen more deer this year than I ever have, but Im also spending more time in a tree than I ever have. My buck sightings have been up, mot most are young bucks.
This is also my first year paying attention to the wind. Which im sure is helping out tremendously.

Re: Public Land sightings
I see deer about 30 percent of my sits the days I have seen buck's I usually see several together.
I've seen 1 doe this season
Several basket rack bucks
3 two and a half bucks I let go and 2 shooters and I killed neither of the two shooters.
One was directly facing me at 9 yards and saw me the other was in very thick brush behind my tree with several other bucks.

Re: Public Land sightings
SO far I saw deer 3 times out of nine sits. I saw 2 different bucks while ion the stand and a total of 6 deer. I have kicked up 3 deer on the way to the stand and that is the most ever.. It is nice to hear I am not doing too bad@ 33% of my sits I see deer.

Re: Public Land sightings
This year in the marsh I've seen does, spikes/basket racks and two 2 yo.
In the hills I've seen more deer and a few decent bucks.
I hope to see one more decent buck in range this coming week.

Re: Public Land sightings
I average around 75% of my sits for seeing deer on public land here in NY. I'm actually surprised when I dont see any deer. Most of the deer I see are bucks too. I've seen 8 different bucks this year and only one doe. Some deer were too far away to tell what they were.
I take my Bowhunting seriously
