Island lake / Iron county

Unread postby dan » Sun Apr 01, 2012 2:26 am

Island lake in Iron county is a little known lake that is very remote. I have fished it a few times, and hunted the big woods surrounding the lake. I have not been there in about 15 years. You have to take a gravel fire lane quite a ways off highway 51 to get there. There is a small campground there with a bar in the middle of nowhere. Search "Island Lake Wisconsin 54534" to find it...
My oldest brother Jerry turned me on to this place, his father in law caught a legitimate 50 inch musky there along with a few others and some real nice walleyes.
When I went there, I got onto some big fish, but did not catch any muskys but did get some nice pike.

I don't know the lake really well. Only been there a couple times. I know that there is usually a big musky hanging on the north end of the island and working the shorelines usually pay off.
There is one spot I did real well on big pike and crappie though, and that was by porting down the river and fishing a remote pond. I have not been there in a long time, but back then anchoring at the mouth of the pond and casting into it would give you about a 1/2 hour of good action then you would need to let it settle down a little.
When I fished there last, a storm blew in out of no where from behind and caught us off guard and we tried making it straight across the lake to the dock rather than following the shoreline. Waves got really bad and my tiny john boat was getting full of water faster than I could get it out. We sunk about 25 feet from the launch. I was able to pull the boat out and retrieve my gear, but if it would of been further out we would of been in serious trouble.

Talking to a few locals, this lake is known for big musky. kind of a local secret. My brother did well there, but he also talked of another lake that a local friend turned him onto. Its one of the small lakes nearby and I remember him saying he had to fit his boat up a small creek that connected the lake, and he may have had to portage. He said the smaller lake produced a ton of musky and no other fishermen. I think he caught a dozen in one day of fishing, but they were 25 to 35 long, with no monsters.

I am thinking this might be the lake he was taking about (sack lake) just north west of island lake.
