Because of tree growth they would have to be made last season. It would also be important to state your area, cause I am sure it varies regionally.

I Don't know if there are also other reasons not to include old rubs, but tree bark does not grow upwards as the tree grows. Same thing with limbs. Everything stays at its original height and the tree just adds girth to whole tree and length to tips of branches and top of the trunk. I'm a gardener and landscaper by trade and that is a very popular misconception about tree growth that the limbs and bark grow upwards as the tree grows.

Thought I'd bump this so we can get more data this scouting season. The common sense behind it just blows my mind. Common guys buck up and participate.

you can age a deer using rub by bur marks a lot of times a mature buck tends to have more bur than a young buck making heavy gouges is what I look for. deer like people are different heights measure from top of rub too where tines scratch above for rack size. I think where and why a rub was made will tell age better in most situations. just my thoughts.

Came across this rub it’s about 30” high on a 3” diameter tree.

I see extreme hight when in open ag country. That goes a little against the theory.
More like over head rubs but still on vertical trees. One example one of the taller ones. showed up late nov.

Quiver stands about 35" the shadow in the pic makes it look old but was no more days old at the time.

Rubs this hight mark every trail entering this feild edge from doe bedding.

Anyone else encounter these?

I think this is probably more accurate on sturdy trees. Down south, a lot of our bucks hit smaller saplings and i have seen some high rubs created by smaller bucks that push them over, chest straddle them if you will, work them over.... when the tree returns to normal it appears to be much higher than what it actually was. The areas I now hunt you just do not find many large rubs (I'd say 95%or more are made on small, non hard wood flexible saplings 1 - 1 1/2 in diameter - think willows) but I agree, when the tree is sturdy the height of the rub is a better indicator to me then the size of the tree. Having said that, the two biggest bucks I have personally killed I never found a large rub or a tall rub - I found far more subtle brush rubs as I like to call them. With these, if there is a lot of twisted broken limbs that is a good indicator that the bucks have some decent tine length....the small brush just pops out of their antlers if they don't have sufficient tine length. A lot of people miss this.
