Because of tree growth they would have to be made last season. It would also be important to state your area, cause I am sure it varies regionally.
I Don't know if there are also other reasons not to include old rubs, but tree bark does not grow upwards as the tree grows. Same thing with limbs. Everything stays at its original height and the tree just adds girth to whole tree and length to tips of branches and top of the trunk. I'm a gardener and landscaper by trade and that is a very popular misconception about tree growth that the limbs and bark grow upwards as the tree grows.
