Many counties offer GIS mapping data for tax records search and other uses. Several that I have used also allow you to select multiple properties and then export that selection out as a KML/KMZ file.

CalTopo allows for the import of KML/KMZ files.

Find your county GIS/mapping service
Determine how to select property boundaries/multiple boundaries
Export that data as a KML/KMZ
Import into CalTopo
Save in CalTopo

Is it possible to look at historical satellite imagery within Caltopo like you can in google earth? I like to look at late winter satellite to find transitions better.

Thanks

CalTopo does not offer this like Google Earth.

However, try playing around with the 'False Color IR' option. It shows transitions pretty well.

County gis if it’s a more urban area. Can find 2’ contour maps on some counties in Wisconsin, but not all of them.

I'm scouting a new public land and I can't get it to just shade the northern slopes. Could anyone help me with the correct sequence?

Choose 'Add New Layer'

Choose 'Add DEM Shading'

Click Aspect box, the choose W270 first and E90 second (always clockwise, shades from west around to east=north slopes)

Choose the elevation from low to high that you want to shade (always low to high)

When you have that filled in, don't forget to hit the 'Add Rule' button.

You can alter the color by clicking on the colored boxes.

Then hit 'Save'

This is super cool! The land I've hunted so far is about as flat as you can get so I haven't worried about topo stuff even though I probably still should, but I found a new place not too far from town that has some actual "hill country" stuff with a lot of ridges and elevation changes. I see a lot of learning in my near future on these mapping tools to get the most out of my time in this new public land ... and probably the hill country dvd as well!

I know this is an older thread, but can someone help me navigate through Cal Topo? I read through this thread and all the features seem very helpful, but I have tried applying the codes as others have said but am not having luck with them showing up on my map. Thanks

Felt like I hit the lottery when I found this thread back in the day!!! I’m now using the Caltopo app. Figured I throw out a couple jam up features - sun exposure layer click it on & set the times to help determine thermal switches, cell coverage click it & on and it’ll keep you from walking 3 miles just to find out that cell cam you want to set doesn’t work.
