Cyber Scouting and Mapping to the next level - CalTopo
If you do not use CalTopo, you are missing out on a great tool for scouting and mapping.
Besides the obvious cool things like being able to draw and mark-up your own maps, import and export gps files, CalTopo has some really cool shading features.
I'll use North Dakota for my example:
USGS 7.5 Topo Shot
Let's say that I want to focus on the areas 1/3 down from the top, in this case Elevation 2300 Ft to 2340 Ft.
The DEM Shading option can accomplish this.
Here is the code:
The FF number is an RGB hex color code. You can use any color you like.
Here is the result:
Now let's say that I would be very interested in seeing south facing slopes at this elevation:
Here is the code:
Here is the result:
Oh, and CalTopo also uses transparent topo over satellite:
You can also print to pdf and use overlays. Check it out.

Thanks for bringing this up. I forgot about the elevation feature. The developer told me about that, but I don't remember needing to come up with codes to do it. How did you get the codes?

You make your own codes. Under '+Add New Layer / Add DEM Shading'. There are examples on the right. s for slope, e for elevation (use f to use FT) and a for aspect.
Lastly is the color code

Upper left under settings there is a 'Show Grid' toggle.
There is a slider below that to change the intensity.
