Drone scouting

Unread postby Rob loper » Sun Dec 31, 2017 1:40 am

Wondering if anyone has tried to scout marsh swamp or open field perimeters with a drone ?
Might work. My brother in law has ine he says can go almost a mile? Wow
This would be awsome scouting those islands and nasty areas hard to get to
This drone is really quiet too probably get right over too of beds with it with out spooking
Crazy idea but it might work
Any thoughts?

A lot of states have already banned use of drones for hunting related purposes. Definitely check local regs or talk to your warden to make sure. Maybe there's different rules outside of season.

It's a nice idea but you just can't replace boots on the ground. You can't fly in and see the details in the underbrush/swamp to find beds or other sign as well, you can't sit in the bed and have a look around at what the deer sees, you can't drop milkweed to see what the wind is doing that day, you don't get to navigate the swamps and know if the water is crazy deep or passable by knee boots. All those details add up and you miss a ton of them without being there in person. With that said it would be fun to cruise around and get some better details of a swamp that you can't get from aerial photos. Before and after I scout I always cyber scout just to get a better handle on the layout of the area and how the bucks might use the terrain, a drone would be fun for that but still I don't see myself getting one just for scouting.

I don't think scouting in the off season applies here but you never know what those crazy law makers will do, most of the time they dont' have a clue about hunting. You could be a wildlife photographer or just out enjoying nature with your drone, no reason that you can't do that. ;)

Yep. Just don’t have a weapon with you. Kinda like shining deer. Legal, but one wrong move and you can get in some deep trouble.

Not to get high and mighty, but it's a personal ethics thing. At what point do modern contraptions take away from the true meaning of what it is to hunt? I'm not in it for efficiency. The deer don't owe me a darn thing. Nothing. Drones violate my personal ethical code, in season or not. So does ozonics for that matter, and I really don't have a high opinion of trail cameras.

I understand we all use the biggest mechanical and modern advantage available to us every time we hunt: our truck or car. We use range finders. We e-scout. We use rifles and compound bows. I get all that. But morally, every person has that certain line they believe is wrong to cross. It's different for everyone.

But to paraphrase a judge's opinion on pornography: I don't know the exact definition, but I know it when I see it.

Very well written and i feel the same way but just off season use i would have no problem with
I am big very big on traditional ways. Lost traditions or lost lifestyles. The world is growing and its growing way to fast. We ate not gonna kill us. Our technology is its coming. The terminator movies dont really seem too unimaginable anymore. A drone? I dont think it would hurt looking at the layout a litte closer than an aerial photo (Which aerials ate few years old). Unethical? well if i was dropping bombs or shooting a gun from the drones at wildlife. Yeah thats unethical
Using a drone to look a little closer at the land features an layouts? i dont think so. also nothing is better than putting miles on your rubber boots
But as jhand said it’s illegal here and i wont be doing it
Happy new year brothas be responsible be safe

I like doing it the old fashioned way. Boots on the ground! I love scouting and find hidden honey-holes!

What else is there to do in the off-season anyways?

Very true my friend i think i just like to fly and mess with a drone mix it up with my favorite thing to do scouting
Its wierd but sometimes i have more fun scouting finding spots sign etc. than the hunt. I guess its the process of unraveling all you find out and seeing if it all makes sense and paints the picture of where and when to go where
If that makes sense lmao.

Like Headgears post...aerial pics come from maps for me. Nothing like a tour of a property on foot to really learn...tracks, poop, beds, and all other types that cannot be seen by a drone. Besides, if you know me I'm way too cheap to shell out even $150 for another toy :o
Yesterdays common sense is no longer common
