Re: scat size
Milk dud city, man that's some appetizing stuff!
buck fawns, yearling bucks, 2 year old bucks can generally leave pellets that are doe sized and it is very hard to tell.
I don't worry too much about clumping although I see it more with bucks than does- diet and stress on any deer, such as the stress of the rut and scattered feeding, can cause clumping especially in bucks.
When I find droppings and the average pellet length is 3/4" or longer I start paying attention. When I walk the edge of bedding areas / swamps / marshes / thickets and I find pellets with an average length of that size, I nearly always am able to locate nearby buck bedding.
In any kind of buck sign interpretation there are strong tendencies but never absolutes...
When I find pellets that size along a swamp I will nearly certainly and quickly locate buck bedding.
