Re: Scouting with dogs
Been taking my 4 month old silver lab out with me on scouting missions. Plan is for him to eventually bring me sheds while I find beds lol

Re: Scouting with dogs
Ive heard of dogs trained for this.
Im curious how does one even try to train a dog on how to hunt for sheds?

Brought mine out when started training her for sheds until she dashed her leg wide open and a couple hundred dollars later at the vet. Learned real quick, it's just not worth bringing my dog with me through greenbrier and tick infested woods.

No kidding. Mine was $182 vet bill because she jumped a log and caught her leg. Full tilt. Stopped her dead, crying in a heap. Thought she might have busted her leg.

Omg. Man i hope poor girl is okay. Keep us posted on her
i wouldnt really want to take a dog through bedding i hunt Almost like driving a private piece of property someone owns with great buck bedding every year
Its gonna effect it in a huge negative way.
Mature bucks bed in areas because they feel secure and to deer a dog is a predator. And when a mature buck starts smelling a dog in his sanctuary Every year, he gonna change where he beds. Imo Its just not worth the chance in screwing the area up.

Oh man. Yea, noticed I was following a blood trail. My gsp is a spitfire. She just goes full blast all day not a care to break.

Re: Scouting with dogs
I bring my Border Collie with me anytime I can. The only problem is cleaning her after a day of scouting, sometimes removing the burrs and mud is impossible!

I like taking my dog, the wife, not so much. The only thing I worry about is trappers traps and coyotes during breeding season. She’s a German Sheppard and looks a lot like a yote. She loves it and is seriously sad when I go without her. They can be a distraction from accomplishing what you went out for but they may have a greater need for getting back to there roots.

I’m down. Question is how will we know when the dog actually finds one vs a doe bed? I mean knowing my dog.....I send her out for antler sheds and she come back with a doe skull

I’ve thought about this as well and is what it boils down to is I just can’t live my life in fear and keep the dogs on the couch all their lives lol
