Thought I found a early shed today but this one was still attached. Upon further examination somebody failed to recover a good buck and it ended up in an icy tomb. Guess I’ll have to wait till spring thaw to examine closer.

I was hunting close nearby yesterday so didn’t want to make a bunch of racket breaking ice. It will be there later and he’s not going anywhere. It’s not my buck so what’s the urgency?

Took the kids and the private land scouting rig out. Not much better than time with the kids, a jeep, and the woods.

Wow! That’s pretty amazing. Your camera takes great pictures!

Found the biggest rub I've ever seen while scouting a piece of public today. Found on a a little micro island in between two peninsulas with swamps to the north and south. Pretty cool little funnel area and its easy to miss and walk right past, not to mention its about a mile or so in. Found other rubs in the area, but they were pretty low to ground so I didnt pay much attention. This one wass taller though, the top was belly button height on me, and I'm 6'1.

Ran out of scouting time, so next mission is to see if I can locate the bedding close by that this buck might have been using. Of course I have no idea if he survived the season, but its worth investigating. The rub was on edge of island, the trail coming out of the swamp. So if there is bedding close by, that spot could be real good I think. God looking at the picture again I'm realizing just how ridicoulously big this rub really is!

Any tips for me moving forward, as far as scouting this area?

Perfect day for scouting today...fresh snow last night and good weather...but alas my plans were thwarted and now I’m at the mall dress shopping with my daughter   Killing me to miss this opportunity because I don’t get many like this, but I love spending time with her even if it is at the mall   Good luck to anyone out today and happy scouting!

Spent half the day scouting a new piece of public. 45 minute drive from the house. Found a great bedding area. Its up on some elevated ground in the hardwoods. As I came up close I noticed some real heavy trails with fresh tracks in the snow. I followed the trails and started finding the beds. Found 20+ beds in the area, currently being used (easy to tell in snow). Lots of rubs in there too. Having a hard time making sense of it with my limited experience though. Seemed pretty likely they might shift beds depending on the wind. There are many exit trails though, not sure where would be good to set up. Guess I will rewatch the hill country DVD. These are the first beds I have found in the hilly hardwoods. Its more like rolling hills than anything. Im focusing on marsh and swamps, but I can't ignore a spot like this.
