Apple Tree Cuttings

Unread postby MN_DeerHunter » Tue Apr 11, 2017 5:11 am

Does anyone know anything about growing apple tree cuttings? I have a mature apple tree in my backyard that I would like to use to grow more trees if possible. Ideally I would like to get a small at home nursery going of the cuttings at some point. I also have a mature crabapple tree that I think would be neat to try this with.

I have all the room and tools, just need to figure how to do it and do as much research as I can on it - if anyone knows of a good resource online on the subject it would be greatly appreciated. Here are some of my questions:

Time of year (Have to cut when dormant?)
How and where to cut (Angled vs horizontal/ below bud on previous years growth or does this not matter?)
What to plant them in (soil, peat, perlite, etc.)
Is a root hormone required?
Do you need to graft cuttings with rootstock? If so, where do you find this?

Again, if anyone can help me fill in the blanks on this stuff that would be great!
