Black Bear Hunting Book Recommendations

Unread postby Horizontal Hunter » Wed Feb 15, 2017 10:20 am

I am looking for some good books on hunting black bears. Preferably books that focus on New England bear hunting.

I am looking for a good primer to get started on black bear hunting here in New England. The only book I have on bear hunting is Dick Scorzafava's book : "The Radical Bear Hunter."

Thanks,

Bob

Dr. Ken Nordberg's Do It Yourself Black Bear Baiting & Hunting
Richard P. Smith's Black Bear Hunting
Doug Boze No Bait Just Bears!: Black Bear Hunting Tactics
Doug Boze Ultimate Guide to Black Bear Hunting

I have the first two books and they are both very good.
Nordberg's book is about hunting over bait
Smith's book is mostly hunting over bait with some hound hunting info
I don't have the Boze books but I've been thinking about getting them. I believe they are geared more to spot and stalk in the west.

If you are planning on baiting, my book the Bear Baiter's manual is one you should have. http://www.bernieoutdoors.com/

Richard P Smith has a couple good bear hunting books as well.

Hey all,

I am Douglas Boze, the author of "No Bait Just Bears" and "The Ultimate Guide To Black Bear Hunting". I just wanted to point out that if you are going to buy one of my books, to get the "Ultimate Guide" book. "No Bait" was my first book, self published and contains lots of great info on how to hunt bears without the use of bait, hence the name.

However, "Ultimate Guide" contains all the info of the first book, plus tons more. For this book, I was commissioned by a publisher to write it, it is much more refined and is almost triple the size in text. I have found it cheapest online at Target.

Anyway, this is more of a way to try to save a guy a few bucks, than a sales pitch.

I have read, "Education of a bear hunter" by Flowers, but it is more of a story book than a how to. It does list some interesting behavior on bears and is an interesting read.
Bear Hunting magazine is another good resource.
Regardless on what you choose, thanks for the support and I look forward to reading and contributing to the site.

This is a great book. Even if you don't bait yourself and do a guided hunt. Lot's of great detailed info about bear hunting in general.

I have ordered "The Ultimate Guide to Black Bear Hunting" along with another book. I haven't been able to find his other book at a reasonable price yet.

Thanks to all for these suggestions. I appreciate it.

Bernie's book is a great bear hunting resource. I am actually re-reading it now in preparation for my zone C hunt this year.

I just finished the "Ultimate Guide" today and I can say that it is by far the best hunting book I have read. It is well written, direct, and focused on real life bear hunting. I am looking forward to reading it again to see what I missed in the first read.

Thank you,

Bob
