That's a good one. He's probably cruising through looking for sows now, but he knows where the bait is so you will probably see him again.

Yes. I have 4 different groups of sows and cubs on this bait so it gets a fair amount of breeding activity. Will see how the chips fall in July and August. May/June baiting can give a lot of guys false comfort in their setups with the amount of breeding activity. I may run and gun another bait in July if I need to investigate other preferrred bedding areas.

Site #2
Legend
Dark Green = Swamp/Coniferous
Medium Green = Upland/Deciduous
Light Green = Open pockets in timber / Clear Cut / Smaller Trees
Red Star = Bait Site
Black Square = Stand Site
Blue = Wind/Thermals
Orange = Bear Travel
Pink = Access
East Wind Hunt
This is my favorite wind for this setup. The creek in the pictured map has a deep bank which significantly limits travel from the west. I'm actually set up in the creek for this hunt and can move upstream/downstream if the wind has a touch of north or south. The creek provides some thermal protection as well. Winds are predominantly westerly as well so this should be a dynamite setup.
West Wind Hunt
This isn't ideal but workable. There is small clearcut adjacent to open hardwoods. I am setup in a deadfall near this clearcut. Like Site #1, the small clearcut creates localized area of reduced pressure which creates a bit of a swirl / scent checking area. I don't expect bears to enter this cutover or the open hardwoods to the east, but I expect them to possibly use this cutover for scent checking the bait prior to approach. Ideally, the shot is during the approach to the bait as the shot at bait is a bit farther than desired for my traditional archery tackle. I'm showing SW wind in this case since its the most difficult but also very common in early fall. It sets up better for straight W or NW. There is another deadfall closer to the bait that may work as well but it needs to be vetted and my access would need to be adjusted.

One of my favorite aspects of bear hunting is getting my kids involved. Preparing the baits with a plethora of sweets is intriguing to my kids and they always want to be involved.
But you need to listen to the bear hunt song while baiting.

Trail mix and bavarian cream has been the favorite of the bears this season. It doesn't last long in the woods.
