Re: 2017 WI Zone B Strutnrut716
I just got back home from Northern Wis (Zone B). I shot one on Tuesday ! Been pulling all our trailcams, bait stumps, stands, etc for the past few days and , of course, putting the bear in my freezer. It ended up being smaller than my goal ( misjudged its size) but what an incredible hunt ! It was non stop action everywhere we went for 7 straight days !
Now than I'm back and connected to the internet I will compile my videos, photos, story and post within the next few days.

Re: 2017 WI Zone B Strutnrut716
Here is the first video. Shot on my cellphone. (Will post more tomorrow. Ive been gone for 24 straight days and my wife needs my time)
Just a recap:
We started baiting July 6th. We had a total of 5 bait sites, 2 private and 3 public. We baited every 3rd day up until 2 weeks before, then every other day and then every day the last week. Large shooter bears were common until the berries and acorns started...just about when my season started Sept 13. Seeing bears on site quite honestly was AN UNDERSTATEMENT. I never knew there were sooo many bears in our area. We all say (after what we saw this season) that there may just be problem/nuisance bears in the coming years. I passed on numerous different bears in that 175-225 lb range. Because I knew of the potential of shooting a giant. But for the 1st week the shooters were gone... Also, I contemplated shooting my bow but after waiting 12 years I just felt better taking my rifle. AND BOY was I glad I had the gun. 3 of the 6 nights we got pegged down by sows with cubs. Two of these incidents had the sows coming up under us. My uncle was by my side doing most of the video work. Remarkably, the private sites shut down and the 3rd public was overtaken by a logging operation right before the season.
This first vid is of day 3 afternoon. Mama sow came into the bait from the right/below bringing in her 3 cubs. One of those 225lbers was on the bait and a second 200lber was off to the right below. Mama started charging the 225lber at the bait and 2 of the cubs go up trees in front of us. This is were the vid starts. You will see Mama below on the right, first, charge/bluff the 225er but he doesn't move. Listen closely, you will hear the cubs "huff" up in the trees. I wouldn't even want to tangle with these cubs let alone Mama. .. Mama gets held off , goes left, and the reappears on the left side. 200lber never gives up the bait. Finally I clipped in the second half of this visit where the cubs are under the tree holding my trailcam. You will see..

Cool video....lots of action makes a long day on stand go fast. Have to add as I am always trying to educate, that hollow log with the plywood attached is a big no no, even on private land. Just saying!

Thanks Mike. I was totally unaware of that ! I learned this hunt from someone who has been doing this for 6 years and I will advise him of this. Bet he doesn't know either.

Plywood is the number one illegal thing I see on bear baits. #2 is concrete blocks.
No man made materials.

Honestly...a guy cant even step in the woods without unknowingly doing something wrong...I swear they have it set up that way.

Too bad you guys didn't notice some of my photos back in July of the boards attached. We could have easily taken them off then. Followed everything else to the strictest sense of the law...I think. Guess it is what it is. Bear hunting is sooo addicting and I am definitely hooked ! I have learned a ton from you guys and the podcasts. Thank you !
And I shortened the video posted above. Tried to edit on youtube but it didn't work. Here is the updated vid:

I surely would have said something if I would have seen it, this is so common, I see it every year. It is a hunters responsibility to read and know the hunting rules and regulations! I made a awesome bear proof scent container last year only to find out I couldn't use it, but I can use it for deer...go figure!
