Re: MN DIY hunt is looking good
Sorry to hear you haven't found him. Is all this happening in the corn field? Any chance you know someone with a drone that can get a good arial look? I've spotted bear in corn fields in the past with my drone. They are hard to miss.

Good luck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: MN DIY hunt is looking good
Well I had to head back to Texas with my tail between my legs. I had a blast and learned a lot about this baiting thing (my other bears were all spot and stock while elk hunting). I am by no means over the fact of losing the bear I hit, still just frustrated.
My baits slowed just a day or so before I got there as far as daytime pics but still sat 6-8 hours each day in a stand just in case something showed. I believe after tracking that wounded bear in the corn that this is where all the bears are living. It was amazing how thick the corn was, 14ft tall and on my knees it was hard to see 6 feet. This bear had beds all over in there and had already destroyed nearly 3 acres of corn(farmers guess as he helped look for the bear).
Next time I think I may wait until after the corn (if it's there) to be harvested and that food source will not be there for them. Nearly all my bears had vanished to the corn and will be interested as what Dad sees on camera in the coming weeks.
I'll post a video of my other big bear hitting another bait and would like your opinion on size and weight just for reference. Thanks to all who I've spoke with and good luck to all still out. I'll be living vicariously through my dad, buddy and the rest of the stories on this site!

Sorry I'll have to wait until I'm at my computer to transfer the video and change it to a file that the site will accept.
On another note, one of the guys out helping to look for the bear had asked what ammo I was shooting. 270 130gr Barnes triple shocks. He said there's your problem....? At 25 yards and a well placed shot I think that should do it. He said I bet it did not go in the near far enough before it stopped. I have a hard time swallowing this and that the conetic energy would/should stay in the bear. Opinions please....

Re: MN DIY hunt is looking good
I would agree it's a light load. I had a bear here run and jump in. A beaver swamp, shot with a 308 shooting 180 grains. Personally I like the bigger bullets.

Thats a good personal account. The energy of a 180 grain 308 falls between 130 and 150 grain 270 rounds (2700 - 2900 ftlbs). 3000 ft lb min gets thrown around a lot in the grizzly bear circles. You need at least 30-06 or 7mm mag to get those kind of energies.

Personally, I think all hunters should use a 12 Gauge slug shotgun.

The bear dan killed in 2013 in minnesota had a 12 Guage slug barried In its shoulder, the bone was grown around it...never penetrated

Would be interesting to know the details of each bullet or broadhead ever found in each bear. Over the years we have dug out many pieces of shrapnel from all calibers. I use to have on video showing the lead of a 308 ricochet off of a bears shoulder, the hunter made a bad decision, the bear was slightly quartering towards the hunter.

Re: MN DIY hunt is looking good
I found an old broadhead wedged in a bears jaw
There were no old scars so it had to have came in through its mouth. It was covered in calcium buildup and had holes that matched up with the teeth. I'm sure it made for a sore jaw
