The bear hunt turned deer hunt

Unread postby Freelance Bowhunter » Tue Sep 12, 2017 2:17 am

This is kindof a long story but bear with me. For several years I have been hunting bears with Tom Ainsworth in the Duck Mountains of Manitoba, most of you have seen videos, etc. When hunting up there in the fall, I was always amazed at the great bucks I saw in the area. Tom also runs some November rifle hunts and his hunters have killed quite a few bigger than 170 over the years. He owns 1600 acres and a couple of the farms have large alfalfa fields on them. The deer pile into those fields in the evenings. Including some big ones. One time at dinner I asked him if he had ever considered offering early season archery hunts. The season opens the first Monday in September. After the conversation, he offered me a chance to be the guinea pig so to speak. So in 2016, I hunted bears there the last week of August and then spent a few days scouting before the deer season opened. I hunted several nice deer that I found, including one I named lucky who was a 150 class 10-point. I saw that deer every single day for six days and I named him lucky because he was always just out of range. I ended up shooting a nice130-class buck.

This year I went back with high hopes. Long story short I shot this buck on the second day. I am not sure if it's Lucky or not, I need to spend some time comparing photos and video. His score is 161 gross for those who care about such things. So do I think Tom should start offering early season whitetail hunt? You bet! I hope to go back for sure. Any by the way, I either saw or have trail camera pics of two deer bigger than this one.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
