Rifle or Shotgun?

Unread postby Mountain Man » Thu Dec 21, 2017 12:01 pm

If you were going to hunt black bear over bait from an elevated stand about 25-30 yards away, would you use a 7 mm or a 12 ga.?

I believe a 12ga slug will do more damage at that range than the 7mm as it will be traveling so fast and will not have time to mushroom properly. 7mm will probably have wholes the size of a pen or pencil as to where the slug will be larger than a quarter. Just my opinion.

12 gauge I shot my first bear with one and only went 20 yards.

That's not how a well constructed bullet works. Faster impact speed equals more expansion.

In Mass it depends on the season:

Early season choices are: rifle, ML, revolver (357 and up, must be a revolver), and archery gear.
Regular season choices are: rifle, ML, archery.
Shotgun season ic concurrent with our deer season and you must use a shotgun using slugs. Every year some dumb a$$ shoots a bear with buckshot and they get a ticket and lose the bear.

In Mass you are not allowed o bait 10 days prior to and during the season and dogs aren't allowed either. During the early season when its bear only I tend to grab the rifle. The other seasons run concurrently with our deer seasons so I hunt deer and if a bear walks by and I have a good shot opportunity I will take it so that means archery gear during the deer archery season and a shottie during the deer shotgun season.

Hunting over bait from a stand I would likely use a revolver or my crossbow. Given the choice between the 7MM and the Shotgun I would probably go with the shottie.

12 gauge.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

If you can see any amount of distance I would go with the 7mm just in case that bear gets hung up or reluctant to come in before it's dark.
