2018 Bear Hunt - BassBoysLLP

Unread postby BassBoysLLP » Tue Feb 06, 2018 2:24 pm

Despite not drawing a turkey tag in 2018, I was able to draw another bear tag in 2018.

Like 2017, this thread will detail the setups, the grind, and hopefully the kill.

How is the journey coming this year? I just finished reading your 2017 hunt. It was one of the best write ups I have read and am inspired to work a little harder. This is my first year hunting bears and have taken a similar approach to what you described in your other thread. I would like to bait in the mornings, but the bears are usually there at the time I would be. Would you recommend baiting anyway? I can't wait to see how your season unfolds.

I’m running behind. My wife has been out of town for many weeks this summer so it’s been difficult to bait in the morning...can’t leave my young kids. To top it off, I’m flying back to the Middle East next week for at least a couple weeks. This years strategy is definitely different. I’ll be targeting good bedding next to mast in late August running exclusively premium baits.

Don’t worry about bumping bears in the morning. It’s more important to be consistent with your timing. I personally avoid baiting any time after 12pm. The evenings are quiet times. Plus, dog activity is usually highest in the morning when temps are cooler and scent is fresh.

I'm curious why you think it's okay to spook bears off the bait in the morning. I have found that it's never a good time to bump bears without risking losing them or having them go nocturnal. I have bumped bears off the bait in the morning and had them go totally nocturnal on me. I try to bait between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm because that's the least likely time to encounter a bear at a bait. Just wondering how you arrived at this conclusion.

My trail camera observations suggest that they leave the bait, watch me, then return the bait once I leave. Sometimes in a couple minutes.
