Cold fronts and turkey hunting

Unread postby mainebowhunter » Sun May 21, 2017 4:20 am

Friend of mine is a turkey nut. He swears up and down cold fronts shut turkeys down. We had a big front move in and this morNing it was terrible.

He stayed home. My boy and I went. Hardly heard gobble. Out for 4+hrs with very little action.

Ever heard of that before?

While I was walking back to my vehicle this morning I was wondering the same thing. Not a peep but I did locate the flock out in a field strutting around. I was within 300 yards of where they must of roosted.

Not being a turkey nut and honestly somewhat of a fair weather I've noticed the few mornings I've been out where the temps dropped overnight and a slight cold front moved through that they are quiet on the limb but will light up later in the morning.

It was chilly with rain this morning around 4:30 here in PA. Birds were fired up! I probably heard 50 or more gobbles by 7:00.
I'm a firm believer in the barometric pressure. When it's in the 30 range birds are always gobbling. Lower not so much. Check the pressure before you go out again and see what results you get. I told my uncle about it because he said birds have been tight lipped in his area of the state. Each time I checked it in his area and it was around 30 he said birds were talking.

The tom I shot last year it was during a cold front in the upper 20s and crisp like a November morning. They were gobbling on the roost but turned tight lipped after fly down. Finally about 10am had one gobbling coming in and smoked him. Patience got me that bird. I stayed in the same spot all morning.Saw tons of deer that morning also. I'll have to look at the weather history to see what the barometer was.

My season so far has been cold, windy & rain. And the action has been very slow!

I have shot quite a few birds in the rain though. Cold has never been good to me for turkey's.

Ehh. Not really. Little wind. But not crazy. Especially at 4:30. Temp dropped 30 deg from previous day. He absolutely SWEARS by it. We hit 7 different spots between 4:30 and 5:30...0 gobbles. It was a crisp cold, blue bird day. Which, typically is high pressure.

He keeps saying..."you believe me now?"

The older I get the less enthused I get about dramatic weather changes during Turkey season.

x2 on the wind.

I'm not denying that but I'd rather make money while the wind is whipping rain sideways and get after them when I feel they will be more apt to come to the call...

When I am hunting with my son, we hunt every day that's available. Saturday and a morning here and there for the most part.

Definitely has put a hurting on my spring scouting I know that. But my kid is only young once.

I have seen a cold front later in the season cause an increase in gobbling and activity, but it seems to slow them down before the average daytime temperature gets into the 70s.
