Hunt 247365 brought this to my attention in a different thread and I thought it was worthy of its own post.

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — Appleton police want you to know they don't need to be notified if you spot a wild turkey walking through your backyard.

The police department turned to Twitter to get that message across after dispatchers got about 10 calls to report sightings on Wednesday.

Sgt. Dave Lund tells WLUK-TV (http://bit.ly/2pMeo10 ) the concerned callers reported that the birds were doing "turkey-like" things — roosting in trees and roaming the urban landscape.

So police tweeted this: "Turkeys in the city? Yep. Please feel free to take a photo. However, you don't need to report their presence to us. We know they exist."

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the wild turkey nesting season is at its peak and sightings are common, even in urban areas where they often hang around parks and wooded areas.

We had turkeys in the backyard of a house we were building in the middle of Boston. They attacked the chrome bumper on my truck and the mailman had to mace them a few times because they were so aggressive. One time we had to have a police detail for a concrete truck and the officer made us stop working because they were in the yard and getting aggressive and he didn't feel like shooting one. We have so many in Massachusetts now, but I couldn't believe it when I saw them in the middle of Boston. Our Founding Fathers would have had a nice turkey dinner, but the liberals in Beantown now think they are saving the species...

I used to do some volunteer work for a local wildlife rehabilitator for birds of prey. She handled a lot of other things, but I went out on a lot of the emergency calls for birds of prey. I cannot tell you how many calls we got that went like this. I got a sick hawk in my backyard. How do you know it is sick? It is just walking around on the ground. Id is swaying or stumbling? No it's just walking around. OH nevermind it just flew off. Or I got two insert bird here fighting in my backyard what do I do?

This is how I got roped into volunteering! This is the loser of a fight. And the lady liked how I handled it when I was dropping it off and asked if I had ever handled an eagle. I said no she said would you like to and the rest was history such cool birds.

Hilarious, but sad at the same time... we have too many people out of touch with the natural world...
