My season opener was yesterday 9/8. It was storming here in the mountains of western north ka'lina (or properly said as Carolina ), but I wasn't going to let that stop me. So I went to one of my best spots for seeing a variety of game that just happens to have several big bucks that pass thru. Either way I was hoping to get a crack at a big buck I've been after.
I had just got settled in the tree and within 5 min I heard a hog grunting behind me. It was odd to me for them to be moving at 4 pm especially since bear/hog dog training season is open. But I'm not gonna complain
I finally saw it and there happened to be two of them (sal and yearling pig). Sure enough they stayed just in the thicket and couldn't get an opening to put an arrow into. They continued on and out of sight. About 15 min later I saw 2 more coming up the opposite ridge. They arced around behind me and took the exact same path as the previous and again out of sight.
I was sitting in the middle of some dropping white oaks. So I knew my chances were goodat seeing something. Then, About 45min before dark, I heard something below me and there was another hog feeding at 5 yards from my tree. He was in some thick saplings, but He finally got in a small opening, so I waited, then settled the pin and drilled him. He ran about 30 yards and dropped.
It was a good 100ld dresses eating size boar hog and just happened to be my very first hog after several missed opportunities over my 20+ years of hunting my mountains.
I was thrilled to say the least and got some fresh meat to start the season. this was a great beginning for the season and I sure hope the rest goes this good.
Great beginnings!

Re: Great beginnings!
Congratulations, where abouts in western North Carolina are you hunting?
My wife recently inherited about 7 acres in the hills around Franklin. Don't know what the local hunting is like in the area.
