2017 shed thread

Unread postby Outdoor814 » Mon Feb 13, 2017 8:48 am

So I've seen a lot of talk about sheds this year. I thought I would start a thread to see what members have found so far this year. I went out Saturday for a scout/shed trip and early this morning with my dogs. Here's what I found.

Here is Saturdays find. I found this walking a transition line.

We woke up early this morning to nasty drizzle and windy weather outside so we decided to go for a walk and see what we could find behind the house. We have a small marsh/swampy area that turns to hardwoods with plenty of oaks and beech trees that turn into a hemlock Grove

We found this set this matched set about 40 yards apart.I have video footage of this buck during early archery season. It's another area of marsh and hardwood. I gave him a pass and I'm excited to see what he looks like this year.

Here is the 3 from a weekend trip

I'm hoping to add a lot more to this year's collection. Let's keep this mostly pictures and a short description of the area you found them to give members an idea of the areas were searching or finding.

Alright guys let's see what you have found this year!

Matched set found at mineral site.

Went back a couple weeks later to find his bed in the area and found both sides from the year before and another shed with split brow in a sweet looking bedding area a couple hundred yards away.

Last trip out all I found was this shed from a couple years ago. It had been chewed up pretty good.

Walked on Saturday for a few hours and came up with 2 sheds from last year. 3point and a 4point.

Outdoor, how old is your dog and how long have you shed hunted with it? I just got a new black lab pup. I am going to train him to find sheds also. I can't wait. He's only 8 weeks right now, I cut up some old horns for him to chew on and play with. He seems to show interest in them already.

Not long at all and he's actually just getting into it. He's 6. I mostly just play fetch with him with sheds and throw them around the yard and ask him "wheres the shed at".

He found that match set but he didn't pick them up he just stayed right by them. I would like to work on him retrieving them once he finds them. He will if we're playing in the yard and hide and seek. I think if I got him more use to the natural smell he would do much better.

I finally got my pup to play fetch with a ball today. He doesn't have much of an atenchen span right. But it's progress. This is the first lab I have ever had. They are very smart dogs. He already sits on command. Good luck on your feature adventures.

There super intelligent dogs and learn very quickly! You can find lots of YouTube videos that will help you.

Try cutting a slit in the tennis ball and putting treats in it. Then when he retrieves it give him the treat that's inside. That will help him learn that when he does he will be rewarded.

Scotty the Shed Dog is on YouTube.

He is my soon to be 4 month old black lab pup that I am training to be a Shed Dog. Glad to see you guys have labs that you are training.

I purchased two rubber antlers from DogBone to train with right now because of pup teeth. I also use antler silhouettes to teach sight recognition.

Be glad to talk dog training on antler if any of you are interested. Got a man in Mississippi that just got his lab pup last Saturday.

Good luck on the shed walks.

Found two more today. Been looking for the 10 pt as I knew he shed about 5 weeks ago. Found his one side today and the G4 was already chewed off. Squirrels must be hungry.

I went for a scout this morning to check out an area I have been looking at. Scout was going great then stumbled onto a disappointing discovery. A massive deadhead. Would have had 15pts but he had a busted brow time. I'll post a picture wheny photo bucket isn't being lame.

About the only good news is I know what kinda genes are in the area.
