Elevated shed

Unread postby Singing Bridge » Mon Feb 27, 2017 3:35 pm

Found the shed of a 2.5 year old 8 point in the swamp today. It was definitely different in that I wasn't sure what it was at first. From a distance I could see something that was much lighter in color than all the rest of the terrain. But it was 3 feet off the ground on top of a bush. I thought, "is it a lone cattail stem or a freak blade of swamp grass? I almost walked on... but there was something odd about it and it was 40 to 50 yards from where I stood. I walked that way and the closer I got the tines and curvature of the main beam came into view. Sure enough, the shed was 3 feet off the ground and three feet off the deer run. He must have shook his head and sent it flying. No luck finding the other side but I was short on time. How about other, elevated shed finds with the antler off the ground?

Nice find! I once found one on a tiny grass mound in the swamp. It wasn't big enough for a deer to lay on and there was two feet of water all around. If he wouldn't of dropped it in that spot it would of never been found under water.

years ago I drove out a nice 6 x 4 10 point out to my brother in rifle season. it was so thick he could only see its head. shot it with his .257 Roberts right between the eyes at 10 yards, dropped him in his tracks. The shot popped both antlers off and they were both hanging in the trees! I'll never forget that! That buck was living in the thickest nastiest stuff imaginable. 50-60 yards off a dirt road. Couldn't believe it.

Wish I had the picture. Years back my cousin found one 4 point side wedged into a tree and the rack had grown into the tree. The only way he would have got it out was cutting it out.

I've found one in a bush like you mentioned and a couple hanging in trees but I'm blaming those on squirrels

I've never found a hanger but always have wanted to. I suppose with more time it may happen.

Me and my buddies were out walking one time in late winter. And my buddy found one up in some brush after we sat and talked about it, we figured it might have dropped trying to nibble on some limbs or something while we had a decent snow on the ground. i guess they can drop about anywhere.

I found a hanger yesterday 2 feet off the ground in brush along side a field. I was able to see it from 100 yards plus.

Nice find, years ago in NY I found a small shed antler caught in some grape vines in a old over grown grape vineyard. Two years ago in Ohio I found one about 3 feet up hanging by the browtine in a sapling, it was from about a 90 inch buck, it was fresh but chewed by squirrels guess a strong squirrel carried it up there but seemed to be to big for a squirrel to carry that high, it was wired indeed
