I think many guys are abandoning the hunting shows in favor of YouTubers and real hunting instead of TV hunting. Kind of like how many of us followed the public land guys on Midwest Whitetail before they went out on their own. Who wants to support big $$$ hunting when can support the little people and public land guys who actually contribute to this site.

I agree

I ramble on about this kinda BS of pushing product prob more than anyone. But my real anger/frustration isn't with the tv host. Truth be told, they show what the public wants to see. If the viewing public changes, I'm sure there show will to. Not so p/o over the gadgetry they push, they have to make a living and put a roof over there head. It's the fact that these manufactures of this junk are the only ones who will sponsor anything hunting related, it's politically incorrect for most to sponsor; like we are doing something shameful out there. I don't even have a prob with the outfitters and guides when there honest about it and not acting like there hunting in the real world. If viewers quit watching and demand real world conditions I'm shure they would do it, and be willing to bet it would be a lot less highlite reel canned kills and a lot more story/tactic filler.

I used to watch lots of TV hunting but not anymore. I get tired of constantly having products stuffed down my throat....

I watch 2 shows now... My favorite by far is The Hunting Public. They seem like real guys that work hard and get it done.

I also watch Winke's stuff but I'm about done with it. Makes me want to puke when he or one of his prostaff guys pass up a great buck then turn to the camera and say "I'm just not sure if he's fully mature" or "I think he's only 4 1/2 years old". I also skip the first minute of his videos so I don't have to watch product endorsements.

Hunting videos /TV is a lot like pornography.... They are both unrealistic. They both are heavily edited to show the most exciting parts and conveniently leave out the real stuff.

My 14 year old son is a perfect example of what is happening to deer hunting because of these videos. In November he had a nice little basket rack perfectly broadside at 8 yards. He has killed a couple other deer but this would have been his first shot at a deer with a compound bow. Deer was completely relaxed.... I couldn't have written the script any better. It was literally as good as it gets for taking your first shot at a deer with a bow! I was sitting above him shaking like a leaf, waiting for him to draw but he never did. Once the deer moved off I asked what was wrong.... He told me it was too small. I'm like... What the heck man!

I killed my first buck when I was 15.... It was a little basket rack 9point very similar to this deer, but in my eyes he was the biggest deer in the woods. I literally had people giving me high fives at school in the halls the next day.... I was an instant celebrity. LOL

It's sad that my son wouldn't even shoot that deer because it wasn't a 5 1/2 year old buck. I realize it's partly my fault for watching lots of these programs in the past. We had a talk after that day.... I told him I was proud of him for passing a young buck and trying to hold out for a more mature animal, but I made sure he understood that he's still a kid and he can shoot anything that makes him happy. Basically.... He needs to have realistic expectations.

I agree man good story! Mine as a child hunter was a bit diff my first 2 or 3 bucks were good deer, but it just happened that way that's what I saw. I took many forkies and spikes after that and u couldn't slap the smile off my face with a 2x4. It didn't matter, I hunt bigger bucks now yes, prob for the same reason as most on here. It's about the challenge, decreasing the odds but raising the satisfaction.

The obsession exceeded what deer can naturally grow, so they had to be created just to feed the sickness. Over all agreed with his message, just feel it is possibly to late, the majority of hunters especially the new younger ones don't have a clue what true hunting is in the first place. Shaking hands with a farmer and doing work on the farm for hunting permission was cast aside along time ago and replaced by auctions to the highest bidder. Friendships and high fives amongst hunters for a good kill went south cause the buck wasn't old enough or hunters equipment choices. Crackling campfires that once stirred a young hunters imagination as he listened to stories are no longer burning due to being sold a bil of goods that u gotta be scent free. All this is created by the industry. Did find it funny how he snuck that G5 drop in there lol.

You are %100 right. We've met kids over the years that came up to the booth and were telling us about a nice 3 year old that they passed or a "small" 120" buck they killed. One of these kids couldn't have been more than 10 or 11 years old.

As in any industry, there are good and not-so-good people. Michael seems like a genuine guy for the most part. Hopefully he strives to become part of the solution.

I think a lot of this is emulated though with them wanting to be like guys on TV. Even good role model guys. Even guys on the hunting beast. Many times, its because mature deer hunters choose to share there stories and passions...and killing small bucks is not part of it. But kids don't realize that it has taken years for someone to get to that spot.

I agree. Often times parents or mentors are also influenced by the TV guys. This way of thinking trickles down to the younger kids and they begin to foster unrealistic expectations of what hunting is. Perception is a very powerful thing.

I think this goes well beyond the sport of hunting but for sake of the topic I’ll keep it hunting related. As parents, we’ve become so overcome with GIVING the best for our children that we’ve failed to educate them how most things in this world are hard earned. Once reality sets in on how much effort it takes to earn the prize the kids have given up all interest.
For example, last year there was a somewhat wealthy local that took his kindergarten aged child with him whitetail hunting in Kansas. The family had some owned or leased property there in premo whitetail country. Anyways, through it all this 6 year old kid knocks down a gross 200” buck with a crossbow. So someone tell me how that kid is going to 1) stay interested in hunting when or if real world hunting catches up to him and 2) relate to other kids trying to get into hunting that don’t have the same privileges?
Teaching is only demonstrating that it is possible.... Learning is making it possible for yourself.

All I watch is The Hunting Public and anything beast. I got into the craze of food plots and all that bull. Nothing against food plot and management but it's not realistic for most hunters not everyone has the time or money or land to do so . And it's sad how people especially the young hunters they need to do this and that and have this and that to be succsesfull. Some of my best memories of hunting are with my dad as a kid wearing the camo cloths my mom made for me and cheap bow with cheap site and arrows but hey I loved every minute of it regardless if I killed a fawn or doe or spike. It's just sad how allot of the hunters now look down on others because they don't have the best bow or camo or good forbid someone shoots a young buck. Sorry if I rambled but rant is over just glad I found the beast. 8-)

I look forward to the hope that will happen. If these "Industry leaders" could just once Break out of there managed property hunting style it would be something well sought after by viewers OR customer's in waddell's reference.

I personally would pay to watch the learning curve of:
For example the bone collector crew, or Lee & Tiffany.
When they step on to pressured public land or even normal quality private parcels.

I heard Lee was killing good bucks on public well before he went big time. Not sure about the others but think he would do just fine.

Great discussion and I also worry about where hunting is going. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I’ve always told my son to shoot what makes you happy and remember it’s not a contest it’s a hobby that’s supposed to be fun and enjoyable. Everything is too easy and expensive these days.

I now strive to shoot the mature deer wherever I hunt but my best memories of hunting were when my buddies and I didn’t have a clue what we were doing or very much money to spend. We begged for permission and hunted public. Somehow we all managed to kill some nice bucks and had a blast doing it. To me that’s what its all about.
