Ed...... you are smarter than Trump with more ability, Trump is a genius (self proclaimed). So you are not lacking ability.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

good at pouring over maps (family life take priority over woods time so do what I can)
good at staying calm when it comes to making the shot
good at hanging stands and getting in the tree that puts me where I need to be for a good shot
good at all day sits and not using phone or any distractions while hunting
-new skill aquired for 2017 having fun every hunt and laughing at all my trips and falls and swims and mistakes instead of getting frustrated

not good at shed hunting
not good at getting multiple big buck encounters, normally 2-4 a year
not good at putting all the sign together and figuring out what exactly is going on, WHEN it is going on
nothing but a simple minded god fearing public land bow hunter

I believe my best strength is maintaining perspective.

This helps me keep things fun. It helps me not get too up or down taking my situation into account. It helps me appreciate each and every hunt. It helps me step back and evaluate where I can make practical and effective improvements. It helps me get over failures. It helps me strive for more success. It helps me understand I'm not going to be Dan in a few seasons. It helps me evaluate properties and opportunities clearly. Most of all it helps me create a hunting situation that works for me and who I am that I can get the most out of.

For me, I think it's paying attention to the small details, thinking outside the box, being persistent and not giving up and then keeping calm when the moment to shoot arrives. I still have MUCH to learn, but I feel I make steps in the right direction every year and learn something every time out.

Im good at making mistakes...and learning from them. Im humble and know I know a fraction of others, and Inenjoy learning from them.
I’m also a really good shot. That helps when those moments do arrive.

Here's a few things I think I'm good at.

1. Learning from my mistakes.
2. Understanding my gear. (Sometimes I probably have more gear than I need though)
3. Making the shot count. In the northwoods I don't get a lot of opportunities so I know how to make them count. I also don't get a lot of buck fever like some. I consider myself a good killer.
4. Never giving up. I'm very stubborn and don't give up all that often.
5. Hardworking. I work hard at my scouting efforts and try to put time in my hunting year round.

Here's a few things I'm not so good at.

1. Finding the big bucks.
2. Understanding the wind and thermals.
3. Knowing how and when to give up a hunting spot.
4. Asking others for help.
5. Trusting other hunters.
5. I also need work on my mobile hunting process.

I think I’m good at moving thru the woods quietly. Like a puma. And figuring out good access routes. Also being focused on stand using all my senses. My shooting on deer with a bow has gotten good. I actually learned to bowhunt with traditional equipment then switched to compound. I think that really helped me learn to get close to deer. I’ve learned to identify every tree, schrub, and weed in michigan. Rarely get stumped anymore identifying a plant.

I’m still working at using my trail cams better. Figuring out when to hunt what beds. Also finding overlooked spots is still a work in progress.

I’m best at cyber scouting.
This next year my number one area to improve on will be tree prep for multiple set ups.

I'm the best at being myself. Jack of all trades, master of none. I love being a part of the chess game, and all the work that goes into it. Ever studious and always learning.

I know guys that can put an arrow in a golf ball at 60 yards, Im not one of those... Never been good about practicing, or becoming a great shot. I lack a bit in equipment savey, Loke late season this year, rather than take the time to fend the best cold weather gear, I just put on a couple extra shirts and buckled down and took it. Got a little spot of frost bite for that one...

Where I excel is in the chess game. I can read the land, I can get in the bucks head. I can look at the landscape and generally know where the biggest bucks will come from. Im a good tracker, and I understand fully how deer bed and travel.

I'm pretty good at cyber scouting and using aerials to my advantage. My best attribute is being able to read the sign that is immediate and set up appropriately. I am not good at using topo maps as I really need to see how things lay in person to fully understand a hunting area. That is an area that I intend on improving on this winter/spring while scouting and then hopefully will be able to use to my advantage this fall.

I think I need work on most if not all my beast tactics if I was as good as I was gunna be wouldn't be fun anymore. But I think what I'm best at is finding areas nobody will go . Kind of easy though like Dan said you put 2 inches of water in something people won't go in it. Like there gunna melt or something
