Virginia Public Turkey Trip

Unread postby NYBackcountry » Wed Jan 08, 2020 5:53 am

Any one have experience turkey hunting Virginia in late April?

I'm looking at the western border of the state, specifically GW Nat'l forest and some various WMAs. Are there decent turkey numbers? Typically birds are just starting to fire up around late April early May here in NY, is that the case in VA as well?

I appreciate it.

I have hunted NC and WV but not VA.

Some tears the gobbling has tapered off by the end of April in Central NC.
The birds are usually vocal in WV around the end of April.

I live in the Shenandoah Valley. Typically the birds fire up in Mid-late march in this area. Season starts in april and are usually going strong then through the month.

I live in the area your thinking about we have excellent turkey hunting here on public land. The key to it is find birds that are out of hearing from the road. Most people around here just ride the roads and call until they get one fired up. I’ve found if you get out of hearing from the road your pretty much off to yourself.

There are plenty of turkeys around that area. Nothing usually too great but they’re around. Late April is good.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...
