Does anyone on the Beast noodle?

Unread postby Mountain Man » Wed Aug 10, 2011 1:34 am

Do any of you noodle (catch catfish with your hand)?

I've known about noodling for years and it seems to be more of a southern thing. I was flipping channels last night and on Animal Planet there was a show called Hillbilly Handfishing. I watched for a while and it's supposed to be a reality show where people from big cities go to some location and an experienced noodler teaches them how to noodle. I'm not sure where it took place but to me it looked like Oklahoma or Texas or somewhere like that. They got some channel cats.

I don't think I would ever noodle but I was just curious if anyone on here has done it.

anyone who catches skunks and babysits roosters, I wouldnt think would have a problem with wading in the water and sticking their hand in a stump hoping to grab some 20+ pound catfish with their hands.

I always wanted to go, but dont feel its worth potentially losing a finger to a snapping turtle!

I know people around my place on the Wolf River that used to pull a big cat out of the same hole every year, but lost track talking to them.

I did in Alabama years ago.We got a few.Defiantly tears your hand up.You could defiantly noodle in Wisconsin you just need to find a place with a good flathead population.I fish for big flatheads every year there out there.

something about sticking your hand in a hole where a snapper or muskrat might be sitting does not sound like fun to me.

Those guys on hillbilly handfishing are top notch, bad to the bone dudes. They have won the Paul's Valley Okie Noodling tournament like 5 times. I lived in Oklahoma for a while and went to one of the weigh ins at Bobs Pig Shop. The boys from the Hillbilly Handfishing Show took first place in big fish and big stringer. Big Fish was 70 pounds and Big string was 170 pounds. Maximum number of fish for a stringer is 3. Thats two 50 pounders and one 70 pounder. I was amazed!!! They do their noodling on the Red River between Oklahoma and Texas.

That's exactly how I got started. Hand grabbing is one of the biggest adrenaline rushes to be had on/in the water in my opinion. I wear a kevlar glove and stick check holes before I put my hand in there, but there is still some risk. The biggest fish that ever got a hold of me was on the Tennessee Tombigbee water way in northeastern Mississippi. I stuck my size 12 shoe in a culvert that was being used as bridge pilings and the first time I felt the fish he bit down on above my ankle. Needless to say I got the out of that hole! It was worth getting harassed by the guys on the boat. I don't make a habit of starting fights I cant win...

I'd like to try it. But what if there was a big snapping turtle in one of those holes? A big one might take a finger off- not to mention the bacteria you'd need to deal with.
