The hens got skittish, but the big boys were itching to square off and didn't even begin to move until we got within 30 yards.

And these neighborhood birds tick me off.

Amen to that. 125 miles and 20 owl hoots later and no birds seen or heard yesterday. :D

Drove around this evening. The closer I got to my hunting spot, the fewer birds I saw.

Saw one tom about a mile away from where I intended to go. But no gobbling at all after I got there, even after closing hooting time, so outta luck. It’s getting a little depressing.

Dating the fat chick. Heard a gobbler on private. Set up across the field a long way off. Near a road, but as close as I could get to the private. We'll see.

That bird off the roost on private  was fired up, gobbling for quite a while. But he never moved closer.

Rest of the day was driving and walking, with only a couple of hens to show for it. The occasional stray tom spotted, but never near public.

Oh, and I found a trail by a water hole that had poop on it. Set up and was going to wait a while, that is until a guy on adjacent private started up his shooting range. :?

What a grind.

Found a fair number of scattered feathers at one place, leading me to think it could be a roosting area. Hanging out now to bust out the hooter in about a half hour to test that theory.

Just can't seem to get going very early in the mornings. Did do 2 hunts today.

First hunt I drove by a field that I saw birds in on Thursday. Never glassed them, but the one was bigger and blacker. Turkeys there again today. Thought up a plan, and left the SUV at 10:20. Was setup near the field by 12:30. Called and less than 15 minutes later. 2 turkeys head out into the field. About 250 yards away. Did some more calling and they kinda started angling my way. Heard a hen yelping back, despite the strong wind blowing. But then the bigger, blacker one headed back into the woods. The smaller continued angling across the field like they appeared to be doing Thursday. She just stayed out at about 100 yards as she angled from my right to left. But she eventually had to go on to the public. Good thing is they both came off of public. And the "tom?" went back on to it. Packed up at 2:00 to try to make a move on the tom. But I hit too much water and thick stuff. With the lightning and thunder getting more intense. I just headed back to the rig. Got there just as it started to dump! But I have 2 options for hunts until season ends. In this area. One where they came out. One where the hen headed.

Drove around abit in the rain. Saw tons of birds. Mainly on private. And mostly hens. But did see some big flocks, with some toms mixed in. Finally saw a handful sized flock working their way towards some public. Trouble was they would have to cross a county road. But I knew they'd sometimes do it. Cause I watched a tom cross it from the public side really early one morning. A couple weeks back. It was unsafe to stop and watch from the road. A parking area was right there. But you'd be in view of where the birds cross the road and cut through a grassy field. And you wouldn't have enough time to move on them. So I geared up. I tried to find the birds from the trees near the road. But a farm house and out buildings. Blocked my view. So I called abit, and worked my way, away from the highway.. Calling some as I went. Then set up in an area I thought would be near a roosting area. Sat in the light rain until 8:30. Didn't see or hear any turkeys. Nothing flying up to roost either. Not sure if they even heard my calling.

Drying stuff out inside tonight. Be dodging raindrops again tomorrow! And hope I get an earlier start.
Happiness is a large gutpile!!!!!!!

New place. Farther away. Cyber scouted and this looked good

Left at 3 AM and got here but no gobbles. Saw two birds crossing this field separately pre-dawn. Thought I saw a beard on the second one. Not totally sure, but I will set up shop were someone built a cheesy blind. Put the dekes out by a dusting spot. They came out of this side so eventually they will revisit this field.
