Re: Getting ready!
Once you get out there find elk, keep moving until you find elk. Talk to locals if you can't. Colorado residents can be extremely helpful, they are friendly outdoor people many who do not hunt. If they tell you they are low, when the magazines say they should be high, I would listen to a local over a writer any day. Biologist are also good source, but do not forget to chat it up with the locals.

Re: Getting ready!
I am also going to CO this fall for my first Western hunt.
I have been doing a lot of hiking with a weighted pack. I started in January and worked up to 60lbs. I am not sure I will go much higher than that, I only weigh 150 soaking wet.
I am not a weight lifter and don't plan to be.
This is what I alternate with throughout the week.
Pushups with a weighted pack
butterfly situps
planks with a weight pack
hikes with a weighted pack
running
pull ups
step ups with a weighted pack
I tried something I found in an Elk Shape article today that was pretty good. With a weighted pack do 10 steps ups, run 400m, shoot 2 arrows and repeat this 4 times. I am used to shooting with a high heart rate but shooting while huffing and puffing will take a bit of practice.

Re: Getting ready!
Putting a plan together for June 28 to go for a hike with 2 of the others from our group. Loaded packs and deciding between 2 trails. One is around 9.5 miles. The other is over 11 miles. Both are rated hard.
Should be fun

It’s hard to have a forth wheel when it’s non-existent. It’s been well over a month since our group has heard from him. He’s welcome to come if he can keep up. Not holding my breath on him coming though.

Re: Getting ready!
Last 2 days have been great!
Workouts have been really productive.
Pack weight is now in the 50s. I’m averaging 3-4 miles on the treadmill 3-6 days a week now. I’m slowly increasing pace and the incline.
I had to get new arrows because my old ones are discontinued but luckily the ones I got weigh the same so the sight only had to get tweaked.
Hopefully, our hike this weekend, 11 miles, goes well

Re: Getting ready!
Went for a hike today with 2 of the guys going.
11.6 miles with packs.
Feeling decent. Tomorrow will be the true indicator.

Re: Getting ready!
I’m a little sore today but not bad.
Overall, the 3 of us did very well.
Boots might be an issue though.
Buddy had blisters at mile 4.
My heel was sore at mile 10

Boots fit everyone differently, but I'm curious what boots are you guys wearing?

In the early planning stages now myself. Hopefully 2021 but possibly 2022.

Re: Getting ready!
There are some different ways to lace your boots. It helps with slippage and really locks your foot in. Also, you can tape with luko tape in the trouble spots. That stuff will last the entire time you are out.
