You've been PInned
You've been PInned and at close range 20 and under,
Buck or doe don't matter and it's staring threw you .
Do you make eye contact ?
Just looking was wondering input, I personally avoid it like the plague.

Never. ESPECIALLY on the ground. If he/she is on to me I either block their head with the brim of my cap or focus in front of them.

Never let a deer see the eyes of a predator.

I agree with the others . If the game sees your eyes you lose.

Re: You've been PInned
If the animal sees you, it doesn't make any difference if you look it in the eyes or not. Busted is busted. I have only killed a couple bucks in my life that knew I was there. I was at full draw when they looked my way. One was in 1979 and the other was 2005. All the others were in the thick and no shot, and they got away.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: You've been PInned
In regards to a buck I am trying to shoot, I don't look in his eyes or even at his antlers, I find this often causes anxiety or possible buck fever. I focus on a kill spot, try to determine a shot development and wait for a opportunity to develop . I have watched acouple bobcats make stalk attempts at deer and they stare them down. Think possibly all the blinking causes probs for the human hunter or the fact they have already tipped there hand on a surprise ambush

I make eye contact with does and small bucks, I don't see how it's going to make any difference. Your 20 yards away 20 feet up a tree and your worried about the deer seeing your eyes? I mean your already a big blob sticking out of a tree. If they look up I'm more worried about movement then anything else.

Re: You've been PInned
In my experiences eye contact has always been a no no, I have done both tho. It seems that they get extra jittery, like they get the predator /prey feeling. In my opinion being pinned isnt busted ive had them stare for a while and avoided eye contact and they seem to calm down most of the time.

Re: You've been PInned
I had a mature buck see me on the ground at 5 yards this morning. I had my hat down over my eyes. He just jumped then walked off slowly. Wind and thermals were in my favor. I do not believe I spooked him at all. If I had been looking right at him and made eye contact you better believe he would have been spooked.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

Re: You've been PInned
Sounds crazy but when you're working cows, and trying to ease around one to work em easy or push em, keel your head down and you can do it...make eye contact and you won't get half way around em before they bust.
To me it's kind of like when the little hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and animals are a lot more perceptive then me, so I choose not to.

I try not to, I look down and just barely keep the deers neck and jaw area in my sight to know if and when they look away. I think it just helps keep me more calm.
