GPS tracking of a UP wolf
Pretty amazing how far it traveled in a fairly short period of time ending up in Arcadia on April 15th. Not surprising we have them spotted in southern WI quite often.
Here’s the entire story.

Re: GPS tracking of a UP wolf
I’ve heard they roam, but when you realize that Lake Superior looks like a pond in that top pic, that tells you the scale.
Unreal.

Pretty cool to see the amount of ground that they cover. I never would have imagined that they cover that much ground.

The varied change in habitat is the most surprising. That wolf saw everything from big woods to farmland to bluff country then back to the real big woods.

That’s why they have been so successful. It is no different than the nomadic existence of early humans moving from resource to resource based on the seasons and the availability of food.
It’s a proven strategy for success.

Re: GPS tracking of a UP wolf
The first time I ever saw wolf tracks here in northern WI was in the late 80s or early 90s.
I saw a set on a back road in the winter.
I followed them for awhile through the woods and quickly realized there was two of them.
I didn't follow real far, and I heard a truck pull up by mine on the road, so I walked back out to see who it was.
It was a wildlife biologist with a tracking box, one of them had a tracking collar on.
This was about 25-30 miles south of the south shore of Lake superior.
He told me they were from northern Minnesota, and had been south and east of me in the preceding days, and seemed to be heading home.
At one point they had even been close to the twin cities northern suburbs.
I've heard other similar stories too.
They must just survey the region looking for better opportunities from time to time.

Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, I’d have never imagined that scale would have been so massive. People see one wolf and immediately think they are new and permanent residents. Seeing this proves how far and fast they roam.
I’ve heard mt. Lions have huge home ranges as well and have been spotted in middle and western TN. I’d love to see similar data on them.

very cool article. sucks that the wolf was poached, it would have been neat to see where else that wolf decided to roam and if he ever settled in an area or with a pack.

Very Cool! Notice how he basically followed the transition line where big woods meets open land. That isn't a coincidence I'm sure.

Re: GPS tracking of a UP wolf
They tend to go where the food is, but that is impressive. I’m not saddened it was killed illegally. Due to legal political bs on the federal level the wolfpack of MN, Wisconsin, and Michigan hasn’t been able to be managed by those states departments of natural resources for several years. The population is beyond its natural carrying capacity.
Persistence is undefeated.

Re: GPS tracking of a UP wolf
Crazy. People always say they see them in southern Wisconsin and I’ve always assumed they saw a coyote. This changes my thinking. Thanks Dewey
