Personal best Striped Bass

Unread postby BACKSTRAPALIEN » Thu Aug 02, 2018 1:53 pm

Got to spend a little time during the family vacation in cape cod fishing the bank of the cape cod canal. It was an amazing morning. Caught this 40in slob at 6am. I was fixing to head back to the house for breakfast with the kids, when the birds showed up smacking the water and then the bass started breaking on the surface. They were all out blitzing on mackarel. It was a trip I'll never forget. Fed 7 adults that night and still have half in the freezer!

Nice! I’ve heard it’s a great trip up there. Some guys I know spent 3 days up there and crushed them.

Thanks fellas. The canal is basically the intercoastal waterway which connects buzzards bay to the west with capecod bay to the east. The difference in tide times between the bays causes crazy shift in current and level. The current actually switches twice a day. It is a very popular place and can be combat fishing at times with the crowds. I got there at 3am and there were 20 trucks already there. But the fish are sure there too.

Nice one. Sure miss chasing them up and down the coast. Caught Bunches of them back in my younger days. Can't complain though, I'll take the upper Midwest hunting and fishing over the overpopulation of the east any day. ;)

We go camping at Bourne Scenic Park along the canal. Been going there for about 28 years since I was a tot. What part of the canal you fish at?

This was my 1st time at the canal although we have been going to the cape for vacation 15 years. I was fishing the east end between the Sagamore bridge and the inlet. They catch bass along the entire length on both sides though. I believe the RR bridge is a hot spot by where you stay.

Yeah it seems like it's timing more than anything. When they are there everyone is catching them! I haven't fished the canal for quite some time. I remember catching a 28" back when the size limit was 32". I've thrown plenty of pogies and mackerel in the canal.
