Why would a Muskie do this?
Big musky is swimming with his head above water. But why? I have a guess but want to hear what others have to say first.

Re: Why would a Muskie do this?
I have seen this a number of times with musky and pike.
No real good explanation for it other than they do it because they want to.
Perfect time to throw surface baits. I have heard of people actually catching them quite easily when this happens.

Re: Why would a Muskie do this?
I’m not familiar with pike and Muskie...
I’ve seen largemouth bass do this trying to spit out a lure after the line snaps. The bass I saw kept breaking the surface and was trashing wildly trying to get the spinner bait off his face after the line broke. My guess is when a lure is hung in a fishes mouth like this it throws off their equilibrium and they take a few days to get over the weight and obstruction and possible loss of sight on one side of their face.

Be original and Enjoy every step along the adventure.

This is exactly why. Wait 3 days and he will be hungry again! Until then don’t waste your time

Is that why they do that? I usually only see them above the surface due to spawning activities.

Not sure why the sturgeon do it but I highly doubt it's food related since there bottom feeders primarily, but they do it all the time, they also jump a lot too, you will notice that when your out there on flat calm days...

Re: Why would a Muskie do this?
I've read they do this to swallow air to help with digestion.
I had the biggest muskie of my life do this to me a couple years ago. It came up right next to the boat, wasn't following my lure, just nice and lazy. It was 5 feet away from me so I got a great look. Easily 50+ inches. Gulped some air and slowly made her way back down into the depths. She was definitely not in an eating mood.
