Lunch break lunkers & 2022 fishing Bug

Unread postby Bonecrusher101 » Mon Apr 04, 2022 1:48 am

I’ve always enjoyed fresh caught fried crappie and largemouth bass. I just never really had or made time to go more than once or twice every spring. I usually focus on spring scouting and loading up on new deer hunting spots for the fall.

In February I got a new deep fryer and had been asking co workers if they wanted to trade venison for fresh caught fish. I wasn’t getting anywhere and decided I’d have to go another route.

March 1st I took a day off to get a recall taken care of and was given a loaner for the rest of the day. With wife and kiddos in a routine that opened an opportunity for me to hit the woods and water. I had a plan to hike in to a couple lakes I knew and give them a try. I jumped a big group of deer and watched them file through the woods. After spending the afternoon out there I finally started getting into fish. I put the fish in the loaner took them home then we cooked them for dinner and I got out later and swapped vehicles after they replaced air bags in my suv.

Then the kiddos wanted to go and going deep would be too much, so we went to a heavily fished community pond. Water was cold and brim weren’t biting yet. The girls seemed to enjoy it ok, but they quickly turned into dancing and collecting flowers.

At work, a co worker wanted to get everyone interested in fishing to hit a pond she knew about. That day she had her kayak and I had my canoe at work with a plan to fish after work. That day, I went and made a cast and dash at one of the two ponds at work on my lunch break and got a head start with one in the cooler.

I caught a few smaller ones from my canoe that afternoon. My co worker left when I did and went back to work and caught a nice bass.

The next day word had spread that I was catching nice fish at work on my break. I was worried that everyone would be fishing it out in no time. I told everyone that I was going to hammer it and if they wanted to fish it, they better not wait around.

To my surprise, most of my coworkers haven’t even messed with it. Apparently, it’s much easier to talk about it than to be about it! Most coworkers say they want to take their time fishing and not be rushed. I understand that, but I’ve also believed it when dan said he could do more damage deer hunting straight after work in his work boots than if he only hunted weekends.

Anyway these are all the fish I’ve caught at work either on my lunch or 15 minute break over the last 3 weeks.

Anyway, work sucks but skipping lunch and hooking up with a nice bass then sneaking a bite of lunch in while you are working has been a fun way to break up the monotony of life at work. And we’ve been getting some good dinners out of it too!

I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Took the kids fishing after church at a community pond. We dug for worms and both girls had a blast. One caught a brim and the other found a dollar by the sidewalk, they were pumped!

Nice catch! I bet if u strategically sunk a few brush piles you could pile the suckers up. In my experience most those fountain ponds don’t have a scrap of cover.

Correct, there’s absolutely nothing structure to hold fish.

What should I put down there? That would be quick and easy.

Since u are bass fishing from the bank I would recommend horizontal cover instead of vertical. That way u can cast and run your lure over the top without hanging it. Logs would probably be the easiest. Sounds like you fish it at the same time of day every time you go. I would find the spot on the pond that is the most shaded during your lunch time. Deploy some cover there and you should be in the chips in no time.

Very solid advice! My guess is you wade in there with a log and anchor it at both ends?
