Heavy spring rains have been few and far between this year. Still managed to find some good creek fish though. Freezer is well stocked.

Are these fish ever catchable with a rod and reel or do they pretty much live like a big ol buck?

They are but the odds are just better waiting for the spawn and doing it by hand IMO. Big fish usually means big baits. Flatheads love a big live bluegill. Night/late evening time is usually when I catch my biggest fish via rod and reel as well.

In the lakes where I go, you really don't have to worry about it. The fish are in caves sitting on or guarding eggs. That's why they latch on to ya, to protect the fry or the den. Some holes are natural others we sink big culverts and put a sand bottom in em. Turtles don't wanna jack with those big fish eithier. Where it's dangerous is when a guy has never been shown how, and he's just running his arm up in everything.
Tip: They don't make a trench to there hidey hole, that be a beaver!
Life is hard; It’s even harder if you are stupid.
