Re: Arizona elk hunt
Glassing spot for the afternoon. 0 elk seen or heard there. However while sitting at camp eating supper there's a bull bugling a couple hundred yards away. Several more off in the distance as well. He got close enough that i could hear him walking. Hopefully can lay eyes on him in the morning.

Good luck tomorrow! Don’t forget to take the time to really soak everything in. Too many guys turn those hunts into a mission only to kill a bull and they miss out on all the little things that make these hunts great. I hope you have a short blood trail and quick recovery!

Re: Arizona elk hunt
An eventful opening morning, was within 100 yards of a nice 6x6 a couple times. Probably could've had a shot if i was a little more aggressive in my first setup. Had a spike at 45 yards, broadside but not what I'm looking for. Getting ready to head back out for the afternoon.

Re: Arizona elk hunt
Day 2 found me chasing bugles in the same general area as opening morning. When i finally laid eyes on the bull, he was an absolute giant, completely dwarfing the bull from yesterday. Got to within a hundred yards, but it was way too open and way to many eyes to get closer. He pushed his cows down a draw, i circled around ahead of them, but they headed up the opposite side before getting to me. I left them go and slowly worked my way back to camp, planning on going back in there in the afternoon. It was a quiet and slow afternoon, with no elk seen and a couple distant bugles. Back at it tomorrow

Re: Arizona elk hunt
Slow day today, hunted by camp this morning. 2 bulls were bugling in the nasty steep and deep canyon right by tent. They made it into and up a side draw on the opposite side before i could catch up and lay eyes on them. The bugled off and on for the next half hour before moving away from me. After that i went in the opposite direction walking and stopping to glass at every new vantage point. Heard a few more bugles down in there but could only glass up a few cows.
Some thunderstorms moved in, in thee afternoon, so I decided to head down the mountain and into town. I got a motel room for a shower and hopefully good night sleep. Will head back up bright and early in the morning.
Canyon next to camp.

Re: Arizona elk hunt
Monday was a complete bust, elk hunting wise. I never seen nor heard an elk during daylight hours. I did however get to see my first arizona rattlesnake, a Mojave green, i believe. Just a little guy, and he wanted no part of my company.
Today, Tuesday morning was back on a big bull, probably in the 350 range. He was by camp and is probably one of the bulls that wakes me up at night. Little over a hundred yards is all the closer i could get. These herd bulls are tough nuts to crack, but it is sure fun trying though.

The suspense is killing me… Did the snakes get ya? Haha. I hope you’ve been on bulls the last couple days.

Re: Arizona elk hunt
These past few days have been slow, very little bugling by me and not seeing much for elk In general. On Wednesday afternoon i had a nice 5x5 across the canyon from me, i couldn't get over and around ahead of him fast enough. He went over the top and down into a thick steep ravine, i could not call him back out of there. Yesterday was pretty much dead, for me anyways. This morning i had a spike in range but I'm not interested in that size bull. This afternoon I'm sitting on a ridge top, between a waterhole and a steep, thick canyon, hoping to catch them coming across. I've had multiple side by sides come threw already, the road hunting pressure is insane here. Calling attracts more hunters than elk at this point, hoping after this weekend all the people head home and i can have this place all to myself for the last 5 days of season.
