2019 Wyoming Antelope
I drew an antelope tag in one of the limited access units in eastern Wyoming.
On opening morning, I spotted a nice buck, but he was on private and headed toward public. I made a big loop around him but by the time I had made it to the spot I wanted to be at to cut him off, he had doubled back, was still on private and was about ½ mile away. I watched him for a while, but he just stood there and wasn’t going to leave the private.
By now there was a group of 2 hunters about ½ mile east of me also watching that buck. There was another group of 2 hunters about ½ mile southwest of me and another group of 3 hunters about ½ mile south of me. I saw a small herd of several antelope about 1 mile away between 2 of the groups of hunters. I made my way toward them but had no cover or terrain to conceal my approach. They were bedded on a hillside and I continued on to one side of them. When I was a few hundred yards away they got up and ran over a hill. I kept walking to where I last saw them thinking they might have stopped just over the hill.
That’s what they did. I could see them just over the top of the grass and over the hill in front of me. I knelt down and set up my tripod for a rifle rest. I stood up and put the cross hairs on the buck. He was chasing a doe around in small circles. I waited for him to stop and he did, but a couple times there were does and fawns in the way. Eventually he stopped and I shot. He took a few steps and stopped while the other antelope ran away. I thought he was hit by his reaction, but I wasn’t 100% sure, so I shot him again and then he went down. The first shot was a killing shot, but I won’t hesitate to keep shooting until an animal is down. The shot was about 100-150 yards.
He had a normal left horn, but the right horn angled forward. I took some pictures, broke him down, and then packed him back to the truck.
I saw a lot of mule deer does and fawns but no bucks. I also found a nice 4-point mule deer shed.
On my way to South Dakota, I was following a storm with a rainbow. I could see both ends of the rainbow disappearing into the ground and unfortunately, there was no pot of gold at either end.

Nice buck! You are right about shooting until they’re down. A guy only needs to experience that nightmare once to have that driven home. He’s not down until he can’t stand anymore congrats!

Re: 2019 Wyoming Antelope
Congrats! I’m hoping to head there in 2020 since I didn’t get drawn this year...I’ll have 2 preference point for next year. Been dreaming of this hunt for a while!

Re: 2019 Wyoming Antelope
Amazing shot. I hope I'll have a chance to hunt there at some point too. Probably not next year, but maybe the year after that. My 2020 is already largely booked. haha
