Beginner western hunt- suggestions for meat hunter
I am looking ahead a year or two to a plan a car based, DIY hunt with the simple goal of success on something tasty. No trophy ambitions, no preference of state or habitat, just looking for numbers of animals, opportunities and the ability to do it reasonably in about a week with minimal cash. The idea being that if I can bring some meat home, my chances for another trip for a trophy animal go up significantly with the wife. You married men know what I mean
Elk and some sort of deer is what I’m thinking. Ideally with a bow although I would bring a gun if my chances go up a lot. Appreciate your suggestions for location, species and season. Again I don’t really care about the type of habitat or adventure aspect for this one. Thanks, -Mike

Cow elk hunt, you can draw a tag in some of the best elk areas in Wyoming with 0-2 points.

Are you going after anything with antlers or are you going to target does?

Wyoming antelope is pretty doable. Tasty, plenty of targets, and lots of public land.
Persistence is undefeated.

Bow, gun or muzzy? A late season cow hunt is good for a meat hunt. Archery in many states is either sex.

How far do you have to drive?
Whatever you do - it'll be fun. If you are from back east and thick woods hunter, the open spaces will amaze you.

Don't over look states where you can get extra doe tags, a lot of times later in the season you can get access to some great private land if you let them know you're only hunt does.

I would be just fine with does/cows. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll look more into that idea of doe only some more, and looks like like Wyoming has some likes. I prefer to bow hunt but am fine with a gun either way.

You can buy whitetail doe only tags in Nebraska for $70 for 2 of them and you can have as many as they have tags for. Usually they don't sell out.

Cow elk for the most and best (in my opinion) meat. but killing a late-season cow elk with a bow would be tough for most anyone to pull off.
Especially a first-timer on public land hunting out of a car.

Check the leftover draws after the results posted. Arizona may have OTC cow tags too.

It’s not about the kill,
It’s about having fun and making memories
