I receive this text from a long time friend of mine who moved from Wisconsin to Alaska about 20 years ago. He was out hunting for black tails. I thought I would share.
“Returned from Admiralty island deer hunt Wednesday. Day one worked our way to big muskeg complex at about 400'. First set, first time I blew the deer call, I heard a snap close to my left. I chambered a round expecting a buck to appear. At 20 yards a big grizzly bear head appeared out of brush. The bear stood up and placed one paw on a tree for support and looked around. We made eye contact at 20 yards. I stood up and made myself known, bear went predator mode, slowly lowered itself, and stalked towards me like a cat! It continued sneaking towards me to 10 yards. My hunt was pretty much over after that.
At least 2 bears tried getting in camp and tested the electric fence too. Saw 3 different bears.
2 bucks and 3 bears!
We returned 3 days early. Couldn't turn around without running into a bear”

Re: Text from a friend
Did they simply run out of underwear after all of those close encounters?
Yeah, no thanks. That’s a whole different world. We are the apex predator only in certain specific situations. (like a big gun and the time/ability to use it)

Sounds like fun. Nothing like excitement like that to make a guy feel alive. I would much rather do that than spend a day in the inner city.

Admiralty Island is 1,646 sq mi with an estimated brown bear population of 1,600. Yikes.

Just wait till a bear figures out that all they have to do is plow right through them fences. Just like cattle when they figure it out.

Re: Text from a friend
His response to what happened......
“ …at that point I was thinking one more step and was going to shoot the him in the face.
Anywho, it finally stopped, gave me the broadside big bear posture. Then walked off.
I usually bring a bear tag with the chance I’d have to shoot one. It was an 8’ boar with beautiful winter coat. Would have been an awesome hunt if I was bear hunting.
We can shoot brats in defense without any issues too, but need to give hide and skull to state.”

Good thing it wasn't a big buck, because I would assume a blacktail would have heard him chambering a round at 20 yards and high tailed it out of there.
