Rat trap with jelly or peanut butter under neath trigger.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Get a pet mink like the guy on YouTube, mink goes in and flushes all the rats out.

Aside from putting hardware cloth or chicken wire around the coop, the hav-a-hart traps work best.

We had an infestation of wood rats/pack rats and them things got smart after I used pellet rifle on 1/2 dozen or so, then tried rat traps and got 1 but that was it. Tried glue traps without any success. D-con didn't work as well as it should have.
Broke down and bought a hav-a-hart at Home Depot for about $30. If the rats are around, it produces. Also catches small possums and such.

You can drop it in a bucket of water or use the pellet rifle to extinguish them. I just toss the dead rats in my backyard and they are gone in a couple hours...

I bait the trap with sunflower seeds - Pnut butter doesn't work well around here and attracts the possums.

Behold! The Chipper Dipper.

A 5 gallon pail, a ramp, some water and sunflower seeds. Just make sure the water level is low enough where they can't grab the rim.

If you go the rat trap route, get the catchmaster easy set snap traps. They are more expensive but are key.

First off is the rat can only enter it from the business end, which reduces false triggers and causing them to become trap shy.

Second is you can stuff the bait (mini marshmallows or 1” piece of slim Jim) down into the little cylinder under the trigger as well as sticking it up onto the peg above the trigger. This forces the rat to fully engage the trigger to try to get the bait vs just gently licking off peanut butter which they will do when they wise up...
No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.
Everybody's selling dreams. I'm too cheap to buy one.

3 snap traps set, 2 cage traps and a bucket of water with sunflowers set. All buried and brushed in.
