Close call today.

Unread postby Tennhunter3 » Fri Jul 30, 2021 8:38 am

Today I was scouting a hardwood ridge and found some small rubs that went across a creek and decided to follow.
Their was a few ferns and some small plants.

The stream had just a trickle of water and was about 12 inches wide. I scanned all infront of me and saw nothing took the next step and on the backside of a plant was a 2 foot long cottonmouth.

My left boot was less then a foot from his tail.
When I saw him I immediately freaked jumped and ran about 60 yards onto the next point. I don't really remember crossing the creek it happened so fast.

My heart beating out of my chest and sweating in this heat.
I walked 20 minutes back to the car and began searching my feet and legs saw no puncture marks. And drove home.

Upon getting home I took my boots out and examined them the bottom had 2 marks in the leather. I didn't feel a strike but the boot looks like it occurred. Still feel ok no burning in foot, streaks, shortness of breath ect.

Definitely a scary experience and I'm still on edge.

I was so careful searching every next step I took.they blend in soo well.

Anyways its been 2 hours now and I'm still alive so thats a plus. Won't be going back to that creek anytime soon.

I’d probably take the proactive route and just wear Depends to the stand.

Here's the holes from fangs in boot.

I didn't really feel a strike but the holes are their.

Thank goodness for snake boots.

Spooky. Not a fan of poisonous snakes.

I'm still extremely shook up i prefer to see them well before I get to them. I hate being surprised by them. We have ALOT of snakes here in the south.

5th strike of my life I must have really bad luck.

Remind me never to accept an invite to go walk the woods with you!

Glad nothing came of it, but your heart must have been racing

Its crazy cause I hear biologist say people hunters hikers rarely find a snake. They would have to be pretty scared of me for it to be as scared as i am of it..
I find them all the time just most of the time they slither away and don't bother me.

I scout almost everyday and I come across several every week.

My car tire found a black racer a copperhead and a cotton mouth this week alone at a wma.

I don't blaim you I have really bad luck.
Believe me I'd much prefer not to encounter them.

Happened so fast I don't really remember running away. These old legs move fast when they need too.

I cross paths with them often, just step side keep moving. I was bit by Copperhead when I was 10 years old. Always looking for them after that.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.
