Fisher Trapping

Guys I am new to the North. Drew a Fisher tag here in Wisconsin. But, I have no idea how to scout for them. I have seen a couple of them bow hunting. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Well they seem to like green hemlock pockets in woods. Last time I was after them I didnt have much luck, an old trapper told me that was because they were all hanging around where all the acorns had dropped after squirrels and not their usual haunts. The easiest way is to find tracks in the snow, but without snow it can be hard.

Near bear baits is always a good bet bear season ends just before fisher opens up. Build some boxes for 160 body grips, throw some beaver in the back, and any real skunky lure. Fairly easy animals to trap.
I tend to wait for snow and look for tracks to try to avoid getting a small female.

Like already mentioned, those hemlock pockets they seem to like. The biggest problem I had when trapping them was coons constantly getting into my sets.

Cool. It's on my bucket list as well. Do you trap other species too? I'd just set up in areas where you've seen them.

Good advise. I haven’t trapped in years, had a lot of fun doing it

I'm newer to trapping and drew my fisher tag, one thing i hear is get after them before gun season because they'll be eating gut piles for a few weeks. Any truth to that? After gut piles are gone only a few weeks of season left.

I saw this a little late, but have a few more tips if you want them. I like leaning pole sets better than boxes. Main reason being if you are trapping public and need to carry everything in on your back you will see the disadvantage to the boxes fairly quickly. Just make sure the bait is blocked from the top of the pole.
Pick yourself up some Caven’s Gusto. It is a long distance call lure. It works great and stinks to high heaven. Don’t get any on your hands.
Fisher tend to have a huge home range. Where I trap they seem to come through on a 10 to 14 day cycle. Don’t get discouraged if your sets don’t hit right away.

Fishers like to run transitions, if you got a pine thicket run the edges, or along the edges of clear cuts. Id set the lower side of them. Gusto is a very good lure for fishers.
