I tried a pike replica.

Unread postby oldrank » Tue May 17, 2022 2:14 pm

I decided to try my hand on a pike replica for my buddies cabin. We do an annual ice fishing trip up there every year for pike and have talked about getting one mounted for the cabin. I took matters into my own hands and ordered a rough blank and got to it. My first attempt at a fish replica.

Image

The blank was a little rough. I filled all the voids and rebuilt the damaged stuff with bondo.

Image

I filled all the little pin holes with glue. Not sure if that's the right way to do it but I worked with what I had.

I used cheap Walmart acrylic paint n started putting down layers.

Used the lid off of a sandwich meat container to make the gills. Again, I worked with what I had.

Cut out n painted fins, attached, did some small paint detail work with some of my wife's gold nail polish. I diluted with acetone n give the body a light glaze and tipped the back scales gold. Hit with clear coat and here she is. Still got some mouth work to do. Also got to add the back fins and a hanging system. Got a few other things I'm thinking about adding so it has some back drop. A fun little project.

This is quite intensive. I guess I never gave it much thought as to how a replica actually comes to be.
Looks pretty darn good!

Awesome job for your first one. It really looks great; especially considering how rough the blank was.
