Cape Options - Piebald
I harvested a piebald last night. He'll be off to the processor today. But it had me wondering, with such a cool and rare cape, what Taxidermy options exist for it? I would like to preserve it. I don't have a ton of space to work with. I was thinking about doing a Euro mount for the rack. But I was wondering what fellow Beast members would do.

That is a really cool looking deer, maybe do a backpack frame mount. Less space than a shoulder mount and you could roll it so you could see the piebald part of the hide?

Re: Cape Options - Piebald
There was a thread in here awhile back that might give you a few ideas. I’m with @jmaas07 full body mount if you have the room for him.

Re: Cape Options - Piebald
Make sure you take the hide to someone you know and or can trust. I shot a piebald last year and I am afraid I am not going to get my hide back. Get documentation. I just have a written invoice from a taxidermist but nothing from the tannery itself. The taxi told me there is nothing to worry about but I don’t feel very hopeful. I also wish I had just done a full body mount since my buck was not large bodied.
That buck I would get a full hide tanned with hair on and drape it over the couch or a rocking chair. Beautiful deer.

No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.
Everybody's selling dreams. I'm too cheap to buy one.

Re: Cape Options - Piebald
I don't have the space for a full-body mount. Even a shoulder mount would be tough, but I could do it. I was thinking, maybe a euro mount, with a portion of the cape covering the plaque as opposed to a wood finish. I think that would look pretty cool. The taxidermist recommended against making any kind of a throw, blanket, etc. Said the deer hair would come out each time it was disturbed. Would need to hang it on a wall and leave it undisturbed. I don't have the space for that..

Re: Cape Options - Piebald
Full wall pelt for sure if you can't afford a full body mount, (completely understandable-they aren't cheap), even if you have to display it in a local sporting goods store or something.
Honestly though it's certainly not going to take up an entire wall in even a fairly small house.
The effect won't be as dramatic nor appreciated properly if you cut it up into pieces; the overall color pattern isn't confined to just one part of that animal.
The mural of the dogs playing poker can go into the attic!

Re: Cape Options - Piebald
I'd definitely get the full hide hair on tanned. May have more space later and regret not having it. Also, taxi would know better than me, but if it is tanned well I wouldn't imagine the hair falling out every time it was jostled a little. Maybe if kids or dogs were constantly playing on it, but that would seem easy enough to avoid. Better to have the full hide and be annoyed with space, then cut it down and regret it in 6 months or 6 year imo. I could envision a little wall mount platform with the hide nicely rolled and the piebald pattern showing with the euro on one of those holders above it. Then if you ever want to unroll it and wall display it if you get more space, good to go.
Full body mount would of course be awesome, but not always terribly practical.
