Louisiana Public Land 8 Point

Unread postby Marshhunter007 » Wed Feb 07, 2024 11:06 am

Took a week off around the end of January to make one last push with the bow to get a good buck this year. Hunted Monday thru Wednesday with some ups and downs. Monday, I hunted a new area midmorning to dark and right at an hour before dark I had got busted by 4 does being downwind, busted also by 1 good buck (again downwind), and 1 lone spike. Had hopes to maybe give the area another try the next morning, but with being busted twice and having the same wind direction (North Wind) the next morning I decided to pull out my set and give this spot a rest.

Tuesday Morning I decided to go a mile south from where I was yesterday and hunted that morning till 11 with no sightings. Got down and scouted my way to some new area and found a good thicket to open woods transition. Hunted with no sightings.

Hunted same area Wednesday morning with no sightings as well and figured with this many no shows it was time to move out. Wanted to move back into the same area I had those sightings on Monday but setting up in there with the same wind direction (North Wind) would have its challenges. Needed a South Wind and I wasn't going to get that till Thursday Mid-Morning. So I figured welp let's give an old spot I had marked last year a try that can work on a North Wind and just make my way to the area I wanted to go to later in the day.

Thursday Morning I got set up in a Cypress Tree right next to a slough. My side of the slough was more open woods and other side of the slough was really thick with buck brush trees. Had a 4 point crossed the slough behind me at 7:30. Come 8:00 I looked into the thick buck brush on the other side of the slough and spotted a good buck making his way through the buck brush coming right at me. He gets to the edge of the slough and starts browsing around the edge. Wind was perfect and if he does just like that 4 point and cross the slough its an easy 20 yard shot. As he is browsing he decides to double back and stay on the other side. With very limited shooting lanes I kneeled down on my lock on platform and found a small window at 30 yards. As he is slowly browsing through the thicket, he finally made it into the small window and I shot. Thought I had hit him a tad back, but felt good about the shot. Got down 1-1/2 hours later and found him 80 yards from where I had shot. 8 point 15.25 inches inside. Never killed a really good buck with the bow before, but this is my biggest and doing it on public land only make it that much better.

Nice buck and congrats! Also, I would not forget about the little area of buck brush.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

I've never hunted out of state but it seems like LA would be interesting once the snakes went it. Congrats on a great buck.
