First Blood with My New Bow

Unread postby Trout » Mon Sep 20, 2021 3:27 am

Decided to hit the woods yesterday for MI's early private land antlerless weekend yesterday. I invited my buddy along as I knew he was low on meat, and he brought his 8 year old son. I set him and his boy up on a ridge overlooking an oak flat with his .270 and headed for a different ridge to set myself up in..

I treated my hunt like I was after the biggest buck in the woods. Access route and tree were carefully thought out for the wind direction we had when I scouted it in the spring. Private land, big woods hill country, clear-cuts. Thermals started falling about 7:15 and pulling my scent towards no man's land. A group of doe came over a ridge shortly after and one of the bigger does stopped near a fallen beech tree I had ranged earlier at 33yds. She was quartering to when I shot, the arrow went in the jugular and out the far shoulder, busting through that big heavy leg bone in the process. Jugular blood trails are unreal...and short.

15 minutes later my buddy's rifle went off and he got a nice doe also. I waited till they came over to me so we could let his son track my deers blood trail and find my deer for me. He did great and led me right to her. As we quartered each of our deer, the kid curled up in his dad's sweatshirt and slept on the ground using a log as a pillow.

Nice going. Congrats on getting it done with friends and family.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Got a Matthew's vxr in December. Built some day six HD's for it, and running QAD exodus briadheads this year. Really happy with the whole setup.

Well done, Trout. 4/5 is absolutely nuts. You're a monster.
