Not what I expected

Unread postby LukeTM » Mon Sep 27, 2021 3:27 am

Earlier in the week I took some bereavement time to drive from Southern Wisconsin to the East end of the U.P. To bury my Grandmother. Obviously, it has been an emotional few days.
Yesterday, we drove back through Chicago and got home around 5:30. My amazing wife recognized that I needed some quiet alone time and encouraged me to drive around and check crops/ glass/ shine. I took her up on it.
A few minutes down the road I decided to check out a property I’ve been meaning to look at. Once I got there I realized the great potential for a good observation sit.
By 6:30 I was in the tree, staring at the setting sun and listening to the sounds of the marsh. I let the experiences of the last few days marinade as I finally got to be quiet for the first time since Tuesday.
Around 6:40 I glasses a far off doe. Far enough to consider her out of the game.
Side note, I’ve only killed one buck and one fawn with my bow at this point. Getting a doe on the ground has been a struggle.
At 7:00 she was broadside at what I judged to be 30 yards. I sent the arrow over her back. Thankfully, she bounced off a few yards and stopped broadside long enough for me to get a second shot. The second shot was true. 26 yards and double lung.
I didn’t expect to hunt that evening. I’m immensely thankful for encouraging family and the opportunity to escape.
Thank you all for the lessons taught. I take them to heart and they came into play here.

The pressure is off. Time to find a buck and hunt like a beast. 8-)

Sorry for your losses.

It is always nice to have some (me time). Congrats on your deer.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

It always really is more than just deer hunting when we get out in the woods. Great story, congrats on the deer, and sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. Sometimes it nice to spend some time outdoors after a tough few days. I'm glad you were able to do that and get a nice doe too. Good luck the rest of your season.

Sorry for your loss. Seems like the trees have a healing power for a lot of our stress, worries etc

Glad you got out there and made it happen! That looks like a dandy pile of goodies for the freezer too

Thank you all for your kind words. They mean a lot. We are confident she is in a better place. She was an Ojibwa tribal member so I listened to some powwow music on the way out. The word for fair well is “Baamaapii” translates more as until we meet again rather than goodbye.
Thankful for the nourishment this doe will bring my family. Contemplating the circle of life has been a very real thing this weekend.

Hung two cameras tonight trying to find a buck! Good luck to you all.
